Homeworld 2

I have seen many mentions of Homeworld 2 when talking about SOASE.
My question is should I get Homeworld 2? Is it that good?

Yes. It's a classic in the Genre. Homeworld 1 and the expansion also.

I would start off with HW, followed by HW:Cataclysm, then HW2.

Homeworld 1 is the classic. If you play any HW game play that one 1st. HW2 was "meh" ok, but it had its problems like every sequel. HW1's gameplay is much better IMO. HW2 added stuff that just caused problems like shadows, and subsystems. I only play HW2 to play the Warlords mod.

I personally think HW2 was the best. But yeah...get both. A fun game and cool story.

Doesn anyone remember the game Imerium Galactica II?

That was a great 4X Space game back in the day..., I was really disappointed when the the 3rd one was cancelled, and then Nexus 2 was later cancelled... why do space games have it so tough?

Homeworld 2 streamlined the interface and really added some nice gameplay features (hey, I liked subsystems and being able to single click move... squadrons of strikecraft were also a very nice addition).

Homeworld 1 is very much a classic. Its gameplay was innovative for its time and its single player campaign is epic. I love its introductory movie and to this day still start up HW1 just to play the first 3 or 4 missions (usually end up playing the whole thing... the Bentusi are so awesome in HW1).

HW2 updated the graphics and game play but failed to follow through with the story. It is still a great game and skirmishes are really fun (er, "deathmatch" in HW2 parlance).

The comparisons to Sins of a Solar Empire are few, however. Homeworld is a tactical game. SOASE is a strategy game.

It won't work on Vista.

Homeworld: Cataclysm was done by the team who did Sins of a Solar Empire and is the strongest in my opinion. Homeworld 2 will be less boring to a player looking at it as a vintage product but it doesn't have any of the revolutionary qualities of Homeworld 1, or the polish of Homeworld: Cataclysm. It was a very generic sequel.

Homeworld was a revolutionary game for its time but you will note immediatly that things like queue;ing multiple orders is not there. Other things like the movement system using the system map were very simplistic by todays standards. It still holds up graphically to an extent as well. The music and the story are one of the best ever seen in pc games.

HW: Cataclysm was a fantastic game. Better graphics and updated controls and a decent story. It had good multiplayer although was somewhat heavy on the use of superweapons which kind of diminished the tactical play but also enhanced it in certain ways.

HW2 was a huge improvement graphically and streamlined the interface and controls. It was a better game but its story just didnt live up to the epic feel of the original. Some people also just didnt like squadrons instead of individual fighters and subsystems on cap ships. IMHO these elements greatly enhanced gameplay particularly multiplayer.

My advice is play them all, there all outstanding PC titles. If you stick with one later on it will probably be HW2 if you've gotten used to the more modern features in RTS's which make micromanagement less of an issue.

SOASE is a great game but I think alot of people were expecting a RTT/Turn Based Homeworld hybrid (think TotalWar), hopefully we will some day see this model of game used for a 4x space sim.

Oh...? So the story in the original games are that much better? I only played HW2 and couldn't bother myself to get past the first mission in HW because of the sheer inefficiency of the controls.

I'll try to give it another shot considering how much praise it gets for storyline. And seeing as I thought the storytelling in HW2 was pretty damn good... can't wait to see how great it is in the original.

you're obviously a "mistic" story fanatic :P

HW1 is a great story... realistic to..
HW2 has a nice story... about the progenitors or something (Advent Mothership!!!!)
has somethign mistic in it.... not my type of story (also way 2 short)

shortersaid
HW1 shitty hell... best RTS story ever
HW2 neat story... tough adding "this" would be much more fun

Also don't rule out HW:Cataclysm, while it made quite a significant deviation from the HW1 and HW2 storylines its a great game to play and the Beast are interesting opponents. And the story is quite good too. Its essentially a Stand-alone Expansion sort of idea that Relic is doing more often these days with games like Dawn of War and Company of Heroes. Cataclysm was published by Sierra btw.

I can recommend HW2 also, good storyline, fun gameplay.

I own all 3, and play each from time to time. They're still very good games.

Strongly suggest you get a mod to give yourself more $ when you play homeworld. It's a cheat of course but wow, much more fun imo.  :D

Thanks guys, I'll be sure to get the series.

I have homeworld 2 as well. I liked it alot But i think Sins is much more in depth as far as what you can do..Plays alot alike...HW2 is a little more fluid but i think Sins has what HW2 didnt...the replayability factor is far greater in Sins as well as the better AI....I think what you may find is that with HW2 you'll wish it was more like Sins. HW2 has limited resources, ship caps...i like better the idea of the huge fleets, more than 1 or 2 capital ships....It's definately a cool game and ive been waiting for one just like it since...i think Sins covers the gammit of what HW2 didnt do.

You've got to be kidding me.

Homeworld is on my list of all-time favorite games, and Homeworld 2 was a decent sequel to it, but I was about to post and say that Cataclysm was done by a different team and it showed... in a seriously bad way.

Cataclysm was done by a developer called Barking Dog, and published by Sierra.

If, by chance, Ironclad is in any way made up of members from Barking Dog, then all I can say is they've learned a LOT about making games in the intervening years.

I'm loving Sins, and Cataclysm was one of the most disappointing game purchase I've ever made. Not only because Homeworld was such a true classic, but because it just didn't capture anything that made the series great.

While in not certain about cataclym dev members being involved in SOASE i can say with 100% certainty that many of them seem to be involved in the making of Sword of the Stars (and its following expansion packs and upcoming game NorthStar).

Needless to say any game made by the guys who made Cataclysm gets my cash. Never been disappointed yet. They seem particularly good at listening to the customers (but ignoring simplistic whines).

Never ceases to amaze me where good game devs end up.

If not for Homeworld than for all the mods that followed that game :)

I played HW2 a few days ago. Vista 64. If you ever have problems on vista, the first thing you should try is admin mode. Works for almost every issue I've come across.

The Complex Mod for HW2 is extremely awesome.

That's odd, I'd heard nothing but hate towards Cataclysm.

weird I enjoyed Cataclysm for the storyline and the play factor. The only trouble I had was the HUGE distances between you and the enemy sometime, so I was glad for the time accelerator when moving my fleet or aligning the siege gun. The ship models we're fantastic, when you researched the repair bot upgrade you could see the tiny things flying over the ship and the sparks as they repaired. My only disappointment was I could never finish the last mission no matter how I did it or what guide I used, and I wasn't going to cheap to do it since I go that far without them.

I jsut saw this and clearly had an amazig stroll down memory lane. I'll never forget 3 years ago when my friend showed me Homeworld II asking me if I though it was going to be better then Homeworld I, I replied with I never even heard of HW1. He flipped a shit, went into his room, tossed it upside down and came back 5 minutes later with an ancient copy of HW1. He demanded I install and play immediatly. I did. Hands down, it was and still is the greatest PC Storyline ever. I was blown away by the story and simplicity of 3d manuevering. After that I was hooked on the series and space games in general were added to my genre repretior of games.

Now however I am sad. My HW1 disk faded, and my HW2 was cracked by my cousin. I've been looking for it online occasionally but I can't find HW1 anywhere! Relic also stopped manufacturing and distributing it! HW2 I can still order to keep it for years to come. But if anyone knows where i can get a copy of HW1 I would greatly appreciate it. This really is one of those games you got to keep locked up in an external hardrive during your entire lifespan to ensure its survival for future generations... no freaking joke people.

If you do get Homeworld 2 , remember to try the best mappack ever :) (no bias honest ^^ )

All were made by me , and are used extensively online. Been tested for online play , many have been bug tested with new versions out. Enjoy!

IG2 was of the CHAIN and ya i cried when IG3 was cancelled but i do see some ship similarities with SoaSE and Nexus that were slated for IG3. It mite just be that great minds think alike lol. I wold so luv to see an update or a mod from Imperium for Sins
