Opponents Ganging up in single player

First I would like to say this is a great game but I seem to be having this problem a lot.
Anybody have any good advice on how to stop multiple opponents from ganging up on you. Stopping three large fleets at the same time is proving impossible to deal with and this seems to be ending most my games at this point. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Yes, just "lock teams" so you don't have to fool with missions. (if you have "unlock teams" you got to do the missions in order to keep all of them from ganging up on you which can be tough on large maps) To some gamers having 3 AI vs the player is an even match.
