[MOD] Sins of a Solar Empire: INVASION (new screenshots, May 28th, 2012.)

Previously known as "The Last Stand"

Sins of a Solar Empire: INVASION is an addon project aiming to expand upon the existing universe of the Sins of a Solar Empire, providing original and high-quality content on top of the original game. Aside from the new content, the addon will also include multiplayer-friendly gameplay changes as well as reworked or new visuals/sounds.

ETA: To Be Announced

Planned changes/content will include:

  •  A new playable race, created to the highest quality standards. The Xin are a race of utterly alien origin, and the massive fleets of their living, semi-sentient ships have been ravaging the galaxy for millenia. Countless races have perished under their onslaught - and now TEC, Advent and the Vasari will have to face this terrible enemy and win - or die trying.
Assume the role of the defenders and try to stem the tide of death and destruction, or take command of the invading armada and destroy the impertinent insects wherever they choose to make their last stand.
  • Volumetric Explosions & Damage Effects, providing not only greater excitement to your space battles by transforming all explosions and persistent damage effect into true 3D affairs, but also better visual cues as to how the battle is going, enabling you to spot at a first glance the hotspots and even the level of damage on particular ships.
  • Dynamic Battle System, where each ship class' strenghts and uses are not determined only by its stats and abilities, but also by its flight characteristics. Certain ship classes will be able to move during fleet battles, which, coupled with the reworked stats of all ship classes should prevent "cookie-cutter" or "spam" strategies.
  • New Ship Classes for the new faction, ranging from specialist ships such as the Warmaster or Emperor Battlecruiser all the way to Titans acting as mobile superweapons capable of facing down an entire fleet on their own or even destroying an entire gravity well in one powerful surge.
  • Reworked Balancing, aiming to further focus various ship classes on their roles, removing any overlapping advantages which ultimately make one ship type or the other the ship to produce. Changes will also include increased gravity wells as well as greater class difference in turning rates and top speeds in order to further accentualize fleet placement, strategic positioning of forward bases and other such details which a great admiral make.
  • New Planet Types, which will also be visually enhanced, primarily by increasing their size in order to make them a true centerpiece of a given sector. New planet types will provide greater variety without providing game-breaking advantages to players.
  • Enlarged Gravity Wells which, coupled with the dynamic nature of space combat, will challenge players to an even greater level, requiring careful placements of planetary defenses and orbital structures, as well as fleets.
  • Unique Structures for the new faction, ranging from formidable Heavy Defense Batteries to deployable Outposts which will be capable of guarding even sectors around otherwise uninhabitable astronomical bodies such as stars or gas giants.

An update is coming soon, been a bit busy with the Voluetric and Dynamic mods, but the Wyrm is coming along nicely!

I'll re-host the spotlight movie on zerocreations.com, thanks for the heads up!

just some constructive critisizm, it might be cool if instead of the black hole appearing out of nowhere if i had the effect of literally ripping a hole in space... and then turning into a black hole...
End of gamerking345's quote

actually, I kindof like it with it just popping up. I don't know why, but I always thought that those kinds of things should be sudden, and not gradual.

You could try that, but then I'd have to remove your brain, place it in a liquid nutrient jar and use it for an advanced AI platform which would enable me to slowly but surely gain control over the computers all over the world; which in turn would enable me to subtly take over many car factories' automated processes and produce an army of robots with which I would conquer the world and institute a new era of prosperity for mankind...

...and with robots on my side, even ninjas wouldn't be able to stop me! Muaha! Muahaha! Muahahahahahahaaaaaa!
End of ManSh00ter's quote

I threaten to break into your house with a clan of ninjas and you give me even more incentive to do it o_O .

And I say we make them robot ninjas with lazer eyes and black hole generators....and cupcakes \o/ .

Anyways.....you get karma for all the Xin goodness (or badness?) you've been toiling on, and hey if having an army of robot ninjas that bake you cupcakes gets this mod out any faster I'm willing to sacrifice the contents of my cranial cavity for the greater good (which will somehow come out of you releasing the Xin on the galaxy 8| ???).  CYLON XIN NINJAS FTW!!!!

*stumble off as labatomized brain zombeez* :dur:

Hmm, glad to hear your making progress ManSh00ter.

The Ships and Xin really look great. Also, i'm curious as to how your going to get the Dynamic balancing to work

Me and SpardaSon21 are going to implement something to that effect in Fires of War.

Also, if you are still into the reworked economy you mentioned a while ago, me and Sparda have done some testing. We have not been able to figure a  defenitive way to create it but Sparda has some ideas, we could use your expertise in this matter

EDIT:  i REALLY would like to see my CRF go up against the Xin, it would be a climactic battle

i was reading your timeline again and i noticed that your start date was just on time with the end of the vasari's galactic control did u do that on purpose or just coincidence?

EDIT: i know the vasari are powerful already but imagine how powerful they were before they lost control, cause if the xin are almost as old and just as powerful then as they are now the vasari had to of kicked ass, not saying the xin are that old but if they were point made

Well when you look at the intro movie and some of the history in SoaSE, you notice the Vasari were in decline and on the run from someone or something... perhaps the Xin have our little lizard friends spooked. ;)

Wicked mod ManSh00ter!

Curious, do you plan on adding megalithic structures like dyson spheres or ringworlds?

Also, how much longer?  haha  I can't wait!

HOLY JEBUS ON A STICK, BATMAN.

How in hell would he fit a Dyson sphere, You'd have to fit it in as little sections.

Well, I suppose if you consider an entire map is one solar system, then ya, they'd be impractical or hard to implement at least.  But a dyson sphere to surround a gravity well would be doable and cool.

Somebody give that man some dried frog pills! :p

No Dyson spheres in the mod. The damn things are fugly. And they don't work. ;)

But when you see the Xin Capital Uplink ice9ne, I think your thirst for megalithic structures will be fulfilled.

I look forward to see this mod when ever you start the beta, I'll be around to test it :P so far the pics have amazed me and the set up you have going looks very awesome. Keep up the good work!

No Dyson Spheres? Boo, Hiss, etc.

Ah, but, instead you get to play with this:

Check out my mad drawing skillz:

Stop making the Xin so badass!  You're killing me since I can't conquer the galaxy as them.

Are you gonna connect those vertebra eventually or just leave them by hanging by technomagic copouts? ;)

The vertebrae actually serve as energy capacitor/discharge modules for the power-data transferrence highway linking the forward and aft sections of the ship. The ammount of energy passing through the central conduit is so large it makes the link incandescent and the magnetic fields caused are so strong they  hold not only the modules in place, but also the gigantic protective side armor plates and shield projectors which are linked with the modules, but not with the rest of the ship.

There, technobabble to satisfy the scientific mind. :p

What angles are we looking at of those renders?

I'm confused which way is up and down on that Wyrm.

Thanks.

Power-data transference highway uh. I had one of dem's but they nicked it when they stole my hubcaps. >_>

End of icen9ne's quote

Yesss! Can't call it an alien ship if it doesn't confuse people as to which end is which. ;)

The left picture is from the front, you can see its "maw" where most of its plasmid launchers will be located as well as the unifocal electron particle beam and the singularity projector cannon. The bulges on the side of the front section hold three point-defense plasma pods each. The right picture is from the aft, showing the propulsion section and revealing the power-data transferrence highway. You can't see the hubcaps from either angle, because the Wyrm ate the car.

I hope it has a sexy little squidling in a hawaiian hula skirt on the dashboard.  :inlove:

Check it out:

More coming soon! Verrry soon!

Oh, and with the ships 95% done, I am going to start internal balance testing, a.k.a. the Trials! Gonna capture them on fraps and upload so you can get a decent preview of the units in action for real this time. Coming up first will be the Wyrm against two Kols and a Marza. I expect the Wyrm to go down, but not until it makes space scrap out of at least two enemy ships.

}:)

Ok, here we go with the Wyrm lore update, as well as some more renders of the textured model. Instead of the customary ingame stills, I will take some more time to get those action shots (weapon and ability particle effects still need to be done, as well as sounds) and then I'll post them here.

In the meantime:

Wyrm Elite Battleship

 Background:

The Wyrm is one of a kind ship. Although classed as an elite battleship, this vessel is far more than that. It is in fact the first fully sentient ship the Xin have ever produced, capable of functioning independently from its crew if the need arises and even making advanced strategic and tactical choices if cut off from the main chain of command.

This ship also boasts some of the most powerful offensive and defensive systems the Xin have available, largely due to the advanced Genome III sequencing which has only lately surfaced in frontline Xin forces. The only other example of Genome III biotechnology currently known to be used by the Xin is the awe-inspiring Leviathan class Titan.

The Wyrm owes its awesome firepower to the new, improved version of the Singularity Engine used aboard all Xin vessels. This Engine far surpasses its previous capital grade iteration, having an allmost double energy output. In fact, so much energy is produced by the Singularity nestled deep within the bowels of the ship that the Xin engineers had to come up with an effective way of venting excess energy out of the ship or else risk literally boiling the vessel and its crew alive. This was accomplished by a simple yet practical method of thermal radiation. The Power-Data Transferrence Highway, commonly referred to as the "spine" is a massive collumn of conduits designed to transfer both the gigantic amounts of power needed to drive the ship engines and the information necessary to control them. During the transfer, the power conduits are designed to overheat, reaching allmost white-hot temperatures within seconds of the Singularity Engine activation and remaining so throughout the ship's lifespan. Extra energy is conveniently stored within the capacitor modules which can power the ship for a time even in the case of a catastrophic engine failure.

The defensive systems include the customary segmented armor shell, this time mounted on the extra couple of meters of alloyed chitin, and powerful deflector shield arrays spaced around the vital areas of the ship.

Weapon systems include the unifocal electron particle beam mounted at the front of the vessel, where the eight plasma tracker launchers are also mounted. The Wyrm can also gestate plasmid Slicers and use them indiscriminately against all enemy vessels, as well as use the awesome energy output of its Engine to generate a short-lived (relatively) singularity which can then be propelled at large or stationary objects. The singularity is only a few centimeters in diameter, but is potentially capable of destroying even the largest of targets, given enough time. For point defense, the Wyrm boasts six plasma cannon pods, three on each side, as well as a limited number of dreaded Universal Combat Drones, which can perform both as a bomber and as a fighter.

Needless to say, this elite ship comes with an elite price. Xin commanders will need a well established mineral and crystal processing operation as well as a number of critical research projects performed before they can unleash this terror upon their enemies. However, once they have it out in the field, few enemies will survive the encounter with this dangerous predator.
