Only using 1 core on my dual core opteron.

I have a Opteron 180 2.4GHz and while playing the game 1 core stays at 100% usage while the other is at like 0-2%. This might be account for my sometimes low fps I get. I go from 60fps to 17 sometimes when a small battle starts. How do I get it to use both cores?





Specs:EPoX nForce4 Ultra, 2.4GHz Dual Core AMD Opteron 180, EVGA 8800GT 512MB, 2GB RAM, SATA HDDs 740GB total, X-Fi XtremeMusic, Corsair 550W PSU

Opterons used to be the king of CPU's.

Not sure, I only see one core being used on my C2D.

I haven't paid much attention, since I'm not having performance problems, but it could very well be that the game wasn't written to be multithreaded to take advantge of multiple CPUs. Any given program will not automatically use multiple CPUs unless it was written to take advantage of them. Hardly any old games do so, and still not all do.

On my system, (Intel C2D E6700, 8800GTX, 3GB, X-Fi, Vista Ultimate 32-bit, 1600x1200, all settings highest), I just loaded a game and watched my fleets move for a bit, while Steam is downloading something in the background. Then alt-tabbed out and checked the perf monitor: CPU usage was around 55%, one core was at around 90%, and the other at around 20%.

My guess is Steam was responsible for the 20% CPU and Sins was running single threaded on the 90% one.

hey....i had problems with many games about the dual core thing but i cant remember where i got it....amd have a patch somewhere that fixes that bug in games you play on their systems...if i find it i will let you know.

This is true of any multi core cpu with this game. I have a qx6700 and it only uses one core out of four.

Well why would the recommended specs be a dual or quad core CPU if they the game can't use them. I'm pretty sure that it does support multi core processors. Also about my FPS, is 17 FPS normal for such small little fights?

Which means, once the textures for the map are loaded, its normal to not see any more activity on other cores.

Glad I didn't "over-buy" in the hardware department. My 805D oc'd to 3.32 plays and hosts like a charm.
