Off Topic, Random Olympic thoughts.

1. Is it me or does the Olympic torch look like a Giant Doobie?

2. Gary Hall is now complaining about Mr. Phelps getting a spot on the relay. Why doesn't that idiot retire? From the total embarrassment of Losing to Popov 8 years ago, to costing our relay a gold on the anchor leg in Sydney, what choke is that big mouth going to pull this year? Oh well. he might not even be on the final 4 by 100 relay team. We can dare to hope.

3. Even many Americans are rooting for what seems like Dream team 58 to lose. Well heck what with Mr. "We're talkin practice." AI's 2700$ in unpaid tickets for parking in handicapped spots and the like, what's not to love about this bunch?

4. Jenny Thompson is going for a bit of history of her own in the pool. She has a good shot at her 9th Gold medal, a record. Ironically, they've ALL come in relays.

5. NBC's decision to delay showing all the finals till prime time is idiocy. In an age where we can log on the internet and find out who won what instantly, why not show the finals as soon after they occur as possible? Seeing prelims is mighty boring when you already know who won the final.

6. Speaking of idiocy, did anyone actually hear the music at the opening ceremonies? I'm told it was pretty good. But I wouldn't know. The commentators were too busy acting like blithering idiots and monopolizing the air time for we Yanks to notice.

LOL Real entertaining thread indeed. "1. Is it me or does the Olympic torch look like a Giant Doobie?" Especially the beginning statement. ;)

Phelps is a real talent, no doubt. Seems to have a different attitude to er...Mr. Hall - did you see that 50m free deck outfit?!?! Still, I like a guy with a bit of personality! Sadly, I cant remember a really good medley swimmer in Australia's history.

Aussie women cyclists (hopefully clean ones) are doing really well; although Shane Kelly blew it AGAIN in the men's 1000m time trial (:(

OK - so how come none's actually ATTENDING the Games personally? Commentary down here suggests historically that half an Olympic Games crowd tends to come from the host nation - are the Greeks not interested?

Oh - and the issue about the pros coming to the Olympics really hit me when I read about Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt playing in an ATP tournament somewhere in the States during the Games!!! So much for national pride!!

Many of the Greeks protested the games because
A) It put their country very far into debt to the tune of like $7.2 billion (over $2 billion over budget).
B) The construction was so poorly planned it really disrupted everything.. Athens is a crowded city.

On top of that, now they have 2 athletes who have been disqualified because they didn't show up for their drug testing, one of whom was suppose to carry the torch on opening day! Their athletes have disgraced their country.

That's ridiculous. I guess for a lot of these pros it really is all about the money. They'd probably hurt their pro ranking if they didn't go to the other tournaments or something. What a shame.

I'm so glad we're past the synchronized crap.. now we can get on with the good stuff :)

I actually used to do that. We know you Aussies don't want to get beat in your own sport. ;p

On to the commentary.

Controversy has erupted at the games since last your Galciv reporter filed one.
1. The Americans filed a protest of the Olympic Torch. They claim the fact it's a doobie will encourage kids to break the law. But once they found out it was a cigar and an attempt to help their cronies in the tobacco industry, the U.S. congress dropped their protest. "Of course some misguided Americans still think it's a doobie," said Greek officials, "but it's really a Cigar." There is no truth to the rumor that the famous pair of cheech and chong requested to smoke it and find out.
2. The Koreans filed a protest over the start value of their Gymnasts exercise. One Olympic committee member stated. "Oh 9.9 10.0, it's a tenth, what's the difference? Had we known it was a 10.0 we'd have taken an extra tenth off anyway. It's not like a teeny country like Korea should win anything other than Badminton or Karate anyway." Paul Hamm was reportedly running through the streets yelling "IT'S MINE!!! IT'S MINE!!! YOU CAN'T HAVE IT."
3. Svetlana Korkina (Spelling) made a statement that she knew the competition was rigged and the Americans were going to win before hand. To which we respond. YEAH BABE. HOW'S IT FEEL?? YOU'RE NOT IN ICESKATING ANY MORE. If anyone has received the benefit of the doubt in scoring over the years, it has to be the Russians. Follow the Silver brick road honey. Go see the Wizard of Oz. There's no place like retirement. There's no place like retirement.
In all honesty, If Grace actually mattered in Gymnastics any more, Svetlana would have won by a mile. But it doesn't as evidenced by a 9+ score for Mr. Hamm falling all over himself on the vault. And that's why I don't like Gymnastics any more. As graceful as she was in the gym, she was just as ungraceful in defeat.
4. More greek olympians sent home for banned substances. There is no truth to the rumor that when asked to go home they said "I am home."
5. More Politics at the games. Memo to George Bush. Next time you wish to feature athletes in your political ads, you better make sure you check out WHAT THEY REALLY THINK ABOUT YOU FIRST. Talk about splatting an egg on your own face.
6. Inge and Natalia were nearly disqualified as they showed up to the shotput competition with shaved legs. But contrary to popular belief, there was actually no rule against it. Rumor has it, they posed for Maxim to highlight the feminine side of the sport. The WPGA tour quickly issued razors to its participants as a stop gap measure. But rest assured, like all the other (Bleep).... errrr womyn that posed, they had the final artistic say, it's really just a beautiful artistic project, and the money wasn't the issue. There is no truth to the rumor that Maxim had to send back the cover to the printer because of a printing error that said "(Bleep)s of the Olympiad."
7. Michael Phelps solidified his place in history with his 8th medal, the most ever by any single athlete at a non boycotted games. In doing so, he became famous for a gesture of goodwill giving way to Ian Crocker to swim the finals. Phelps had the medal already by virtue of swimming prelims. Had he not given up the spot, Crocker would have been shut out. Crocker made the most of it. He went a ton quicker than he or Phelps did in the individual 100 fly and helped the relay set a world record.
Phelps Gesture really made lil Mr. Gary Hall Junior look like a horses hind quarters for ragging on Phelps. Can't we just get rid of the wussy race called the 50 meters anyway and get rid of this Hall idiot for good? It's not like it's been a race long.
8. Jenny Thompson went out on a bad note. She got run down again. This time by over 2 seconds. Can't be the way she wanted it to go.
9. Aaron Peirsol was DQ'd in the Backstroke. He then got reinstated when they figured out they'd have to DQ everyone else that did the same turn, which included everyone else. I guess that will teach you to point out they missed an illegal dolphin kick in your friend's race pal. Now don't do it again.
10. USA Basketball. What's wrong with all you international teams. Don't you know this is USA basketball. WTF are you doing setting triple picks anyway? Don't you know you're sposed to lose? Don't you know this was just a lil trip for these NBA ers, who get to stay on the love boat for the duration of their stay, get a gold, and rehab their terrible image as lazy underworked and over paid premadonnas? The nerve of these countries thinking they can actually win and making them work. What's next, will you require them to break a sweat? Fools. We're the NBAers... We don't even need to try. Now Stop winning and lose like you're sposed to. You gave Allen Iverson a hangnail. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Haven't been watching the gymnasts, so can't comment in that.

8. Tough for Thompson, but the Aussie girls have swum out of their skins this time around - it's been the best meet ever "away from home" for the Aussie swim team generally. The boys, Thorpe and Hackett aside, actually haven't done so well. Phelps seems a nice guy - he'll be formidable in Bejing. Oh, and I agree with getting rid of the 50m - silly event. Sometimes you get the impression they just put these things in so give away another medal, not for the actual value of the event itself.

10. USA basketball...he,he...er, I hear now that the Mozambique Junior High School team had challenged them.... (sorry, couldn't resist). Our men are playing to form, but GO THE OPALS - especially Lauren Jackson!

Just caught up this morning with the rowing news that one of our women in the eights had an absolute MELTDOWN during the final (as in - just stopped rowing!) - I'll be interested to see how that shakes down.

And how does Maurice Greene - the GOAT - feel about a bronze medal? ;p

Day... Oh I don't know. Today!!!

1. What a 100 metres final. The difference between the gold and 4th was miniscule. It may not have gone to the fastest man, but the best leaner. Either that or the best dressmaker.
2. What a nice sweep in the 400. Of course Gail Devers star crossed Olympic career in the hurdles continued. She got hurt again. I wonder why when Our Girl in the 100m dash got DQ'd for roids, Devers didn't just let it go. She wasn't going to win anyway. Of course then Marion McSteroid Jones would have run the race and embarrassed herself and country. Oh, now I see why Devers took the spot.
3. Hey. We managed to beat Mozambique Junior High. Or was it Angola without throwing elbows. Amazing what you can do when Barkley isn't on the team. Memo to Wombat the smack talker. Didn't USA beat the Aussies by 10? RELEASE THE TAZ!!!! ;P
4. The Aussies picked up a Gold in team pursuit cycling. Word is, no cyclist refused to pedal in the middle of the race.
5. Gymnastics officials got bood for 10 minutes after they posted Alexie Nemov's score. The guy had an amazingly difficult routine. Given the scoring system in place though, I can't argue the score. WHICH TELLS YOU THE SCORING SYSTEM IN PLACE SUX!!! BOOOOOOOOOOO. When you do that hard a routine, you ought to be rewarded. It seems they punish too easy routines but don't encourage any difficulty beyond the bland stuff everyone's doing.
I've decided I hate the new team format. Bland routines all. Go back to the 5 or 6 per team per event and drop the low. That encourages a bit of go for it among the better ones on the teams. I hate all the whining and crying and boo hoo hooing of all these premaddonas too.
6. Is it me or is the excitement from the Swimming not carrying over to the rest of the games. It's gotten pretty bland except for the protests.
7. One announcer complained about how he was amazed at how many swimming events they could come up with at one pool.
WELL HECK, I'M AMAZED AT ALL THE DIFFERENT TRACK EVENTS THEY HAVE ENDING AT ONE TRACK!!! Walking? Come on!!!! And I'm also amazed at all the Gymnastics events going on at one gym. Or the Rowing events in the same boat and course.
Of course the one that takes the cake is the # of Rhythmic Gymnastics events on one single floor exercise mat. Of course some idiot will have to respond with "YOU DUMMY, THAT'S 5 INCHES DIFFERENT IN SIZE AND A WHOLE 4 NANOBARS DIFFERENT IN SPRING COMPRESSION" to which I respond Yada yada yada so what.
8. Dad Burnet you Pesky Aussies. Why'd you have to do that to our softball team? You scored on em breaking up their perfect tourney. Still you lost the 3 games by a combined 356-2 or some outrageous score like that. I haven't a clue what it actually was. But I'm still mad you scored on em. Say where is our Baseball team? Victims of a format that put the top 3 teams in the world in the same qualifying bracket. Nice job Olympic committee.
9. Oh looks like our boys choked in the first day of the Decathlon. Should have eaten those wheaties. After all, it worked for Mrs. Jenner.
10. The Russian Shotputter got Dq'd. I NEVER SAW THAT COMING. I mean she was so petite and feminine? How could she be on the roids? There must be some mistake.

The U.S. is down in the swimming medal count from Sydney a bit. Our Women didn't do so well. But they did do a bit better than expected in spots. Without Coughlin, Beard, and Sandeno, they wouldn't have done much at all. The U.S. men did well.

Hehehe...at least we took ONE run off ya - the US team was just awesome. Cheers for the Aussie mens baseball team getting a silver, too - fantastic for a nation that really doesn't focus on this sport. Surely baseball is a classic "Dream Team" possibility for the US? Can you imagine Derek Jeter, A-Rod, the Big Unit etc, etc. lining up in the Olympics??

I'd agree about the swimming excitement not spreading out - I reckon people are just getting too skeptical about drugs etc. There is also a fair degree of cynicism about the smack talking that goes on from the athletes. Memo to Jana Pittman: try walking the walk before you talk the talk, girl. We've had months of Jana telling us a gold medal is her 'destiny' - but they dont give you gold for finishing fifth. The Aussie track team has been disappointing, to say the least. I dont mind them having a real go and not making it, but most of them aren't doing close to personal bests and bowing out without giving a yelp.

I was also a bit stunned by the cyclists - we had a HUGE scandal here just before the Games about drugs in cycling, with a very unsatisfactory (to me) resolution. Now the cyclists seem to be saying: "Well, we won gold, so everything's OK now, right?" Er, no.

Still, as a small nation we're doing all right!

Small nation? As an American admirer of your country, I've thought you've "punched above your weight" since at least 1916.
