This is interesting. The title alone was enough to get me reading. But I have one question, why? Have you never been to a funeral or is it just curiosity and you wanting to attend one where the person actually died from old age and nothing else?

i have been to funeral (well, several). i wrote this after reading of a young local woman being killed in a car accident. i have this hopeless feeling when people die so young, and i guess that verse was an expression of wishing that we ALL got to live to be old.

Mig, I hear ya. It's sad when people die young. It would be great to "go" after you have lived a long and fulfilled life. To actually pass on while in a peaceful sleep. It's sad to lose people when they haven't had a chance to live their dreams or "see" what life have to offer them. When it's your time to go, it's time. Such is life! But I understand your sentiments.

I remember reading this shortly after I first came to JU. I was a newbie at the time (really, I still am since I've only been here since early June) and didn't comment on any blogs outside of greywar's (he's a good friend of mine and the person that intro'd me to JU). I do remember being moved by this poem, though, and it's been particularly meaningful to me as I've attended six funerals in the past month or so (and I have another to go to today). Each of these funerals have been for an older person that I did not know first hand. But from the eulogies and memories shared at the services, I know that I have been able to attend funerals that did mark the end of a Life. Thank you for putting these feelings into words and I'm sorry it took so long for me to look this back up and share a comment for you.

They had lives, mig. They probably had better lives than many that live to old age. Dont confuse quantity with quality, miggy darling.


i guess i was a bit, sabrina.

Right now, i myself would trade a substantial amount of my predicted longevity for a shorter amount of time in which i could actuall feel good. Give me another 10 years of good health so i can enjoy my life rather than the slow crippling that may allow me to breathe for another 30 years, but ensures every one of them will be spent in dire pain.


sabrina, at 43, i can't imagine how hard it must be to want to sacfice all the time you may have left in return for ten good years. i am glad that your sibling and closest friend actually had a chance to live during their lives. this was what made me upset. so many people never get the chance to really live.

In my opinion, the only thing sad about burying the young is that the living feel shortchanged, its ourselves we pity, having lost their company. They...well, they are done with the whole mess, and are to be envied, not pitied.


i can read this quote, sabrina, without liking it's truth, right ?. because i did. i agree, i just don't want to !. i think we do selfishly look to the young as the growth and change of the world, and we do feel robbed in some way when we 'lose' them. thankyou as always for your wisdom and insight, as well as your willingness to share them.

I just want to bump this one again. I recently wrote a blog asking JUsers to let me know what they thought was their best article. I got the chance to read some stuff that I hadn't read before and it also gave me the oppurtunity to reread some stuff that was really good. Well, this is one of my absolute favorite posts that I've read here at JU and by bumping it, maybe some newer JUsers will get the chance to see it, too.
