Is it one ship one colony ?

Once I have found a planet in a system and colonised it, I seem to lose the ship.

Is this correct or can I drop some people of on planet X and then some more at planet Y ?

If I can colonise 2 planets fromone ship, how do I get the ship back into space ?

If you think about it, the ship itself is needed to make the colony. Building materials...
