New review: FiringSquad gives GalCiv 88%

"GalCiv is easily the best 4X game right now and the best that we’ll see for years to come. The AI of this spectacular title alone will keep gamers talking long after its moment in the spotlight is over. Though developed by a small company and published by a relatively small publisher, it has beaten the 900lb gorilla of the genre."

And 88%, which is a good score. Nice to see such a positive review from one of the (few, especially now that I lost my trust in Avault after the debacle around their GalCiv review) sites which I tend to trust and find informative.

Excellent review which lists the positive and less positive things and rates those like they should be rated. The AI is such a major factor in this game that it's way more important than graphics and some minor UI issues.

I fully agree with Unicorn about reviewsites I trust(ed). Luckily Firingsquad is still one of them along with Sharkyextreme.

Both sites are not game-specific sites and they don't review EVERY game that comes out. When they do a gamereview though, it's usually quality work.

Wow great review. FiringSquad is one of the few sites i take notice of, there reviews are always excellent and normally match what i would think. They dont review many games, but they sure do make sure the few they do are good.

My favourite passage was: "anyone who passes this baby over will feel like those who missed System Shock or Master of Magic. Certainly these aren’t perfect games, but they are ground-breaking and will doubtless influence the games of the future."

Yeah baby!

Track them down (they're a few years old) and find out.
It will be worth it!

Yep both are abandonware so you can download them somewhere from the internet.

MoM is a true classic (with horrible AI, but which AI isn't compared to GalCiv's AI :))

I actually loaded up System Shock 2 a couple weeks ago to kill time till Galciv was released :) I forgot how good a game that was... definately give it a try if you can track down a copy. IMO, it's one of the best single player games ever made. Multiplayer with the patch was fun but didn't have nearly the same feel.

Heh, System Shock 2 freaks me out. You could be doing fine, blasting robots, picking up stuff, then you get ambushed by zombies and space monkeys! :p

... and then, there's the matter of the ghosts... :sniff!:

A mistake in the review on page 3:

"To top things off, there are only two ships better than a Battleship – the Dreadnought and Ranger. " They kind of missed the Overlord class ships that everybody is scared of, as well as a few other ship classes.

Of course, the reviewers didn't mention that the survey ship is more powerful than Dreadnoughts either. Then again, the survey ship is weaker at the same time. :)

Yes, System Shock 2 was (is!) definitely a game worth playing (and I generally don't like FPS games). I still can't hear the sound of screaming monkeys without getting nervous...

MOM was a game that my wife really liked, but didn't appeal to me. Not sure why.

I think they meant the original System Shock. back in its time it was a revolutionary first person game, out of the ordinary, addictive, pretty much like every Origin/LG's game back then. MoM is a classic that is still played. both were pretty much 'niche' games. so, there's the parallel. don't miss out on GalCiv :)

Must of came out sometime after Duke Nukem. I was completely obsessed with that game for a number of years. I'm still unimpressed by Quake and Unreal. Never bothered with Halflife. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was fun. Everyone stopped playing once the war in Iraq began, it was kinda creepy. Hmmm. Perhaps...they're..back...

I believe System Shock predates Duke Nukem; it came out at just about the same time as Doom (give or take a few months).

According to http://www.the-underdogs.org/ System Shock is still for sale - they've got a link.

For more to make you drool over System Shock 1, 2, and other Looking Glass classics, head over to http://www.ttlg.com/ You won't regret it, except possibly in having to sigh "So many games, so little time!" :)
