oppinion on user made mods.

Just wondering if folks are finding them interesting. Do they add interest to the game or do they unbalance or mess with the play mechanics of the game too much. I suppose that the answer may depend on the particular mod? What are folks favorites? I've installed Frogboys only at this point I'll stay tuned looking forward to everyones input!

In theory, mods should add to the experience of the game by improving the quality and versitility of the available technologies, ships, starbase modules, and random events.

An overview of some of these mods isn't as promising. In some cases, the choices given don't feel that they fit the alignment (Coup D'etat, where the "Good" option is to give into the demands of some random general to change government structure).

Some others have artifacts of not being tested properly (and appear to give a "+-25% Morale bonus"...)

There is even one that gives a bonus of +1% to an attribute. As if that would be worth it...

i had some trouble thinking of a way to make a coup d'etat an event lol

One of the problems with the user-created mods is that people don't seem to realize that it's not necessary to put the + or - in front of the %s%% variable (the game does it for you). So you could end up with ++25%, --25%, +-25% or -+25% (all of which look silly).

hey, i was careful not to do that ;)

but recently i've seen a bunch of MODs that give like +1% bonus lol, they really need to work on the actuall effects of the events

Well, I didn't say it was *all* of the user mods. :)

Yes on the bonus:

"Will I be good, and get +10M people on this planet, neutral and gain +blah% something (I forget), or will I be evil and slaughter [blah] and gain +1% research bonus?"

(actually, I don't remember if it was the water aliens event that did that, it's just the only one I can remember anything about at the moment)

i think it was the protests or something, maybe labour unrest, something recent

Well, I have wanted to weigh in on this issue, as I also feel some of these events are questionable in their adherence to the intent of the designers (as shown in gameplay). My lengthy discourse on this is in the Mods forum if one is interested in reading it.

I do feel however, that some form of reviewing process is needed. I have been thinking of setting up a website (or contributing to one) in which folks can review a mod for several things, such as: playability, quality, relevance, etc.

I'd really like to see a mod review web sight..thats a great idea.

I think it's great that a game is this easily modded, and that just about anyone can do it without a lot of technical knowledge.

The only drawback is that I've seen a few mods that are technically sloppy, with graphics that don't fit the screen or substandard write-ups. But overall my experience with downloading mods has been very good.

It has been stated in the Mods forum that Stardock already distinguishes between at least two different categories of mods ('Official' and 'Unofficial'). It just doesn't show in the Library right now.
