Alliances & Relations?

I understand that you have to reach a certain level of relations and have researched the Alliances tech to be able to sign a treaty and ally yourself with one of the alien races.

What I don't seem to understand, is how do you increase their relations level? I've totally dominated the galaxy to the point where I have 56% of the vote in the UP. At this point I just want to sign alliances with the remaining majors and win the game peacefully. The problem is no matter what I do I can't seem to influence their feelings toward me. As an experiment I gave a good race with friendly relations every planet except my homeworld and all my tech, money & ships. Their relations did not budge. What's the secret?

It's difficult to get them to ally with you. Given that it's a victory condition, it ought to be. I think it's generally something that has to be built up over time, not something you can just buy.

Giving them all your stuff probably marked you as a sucker rather than a worthy ally.

Obviously, having incompatible moral outlooks will severely hinder any efforts at warming relations.

That's disappointing. It basically reduces the game to, conquer my enemies and then conquer my friends. Make that very disappointing.

OK I read through a lot of the Encyclopedia and it looks like the secret to improving relations is trade. I'm going to try and max out all trade lanes with all races and then wait and see. I'd really like for this to be a feasible path to victory rather than theoretical.

Another factor that affects how well other races warm up to you is your alignment. It is easier to get a good race to cozy up to you if you are also good. It is also difficult to get an evil race to cozy up to you even if you are also evil.

Hi Nvrmind

the way to get the other races to like you more is quite varied. I suggest that you research diplomacy. you can build incredible cultural weapons. and in the giagantic galaxies at the harder settings it's necessary just for you to stay even.

hope this helps

Nvrmind,
work on the major races one at a time. Build lots of trade routes, and give the occasiopnal present (nothing too big). Maybe 100 cash for 3 turns. Definitely join any wars they are in. The relations will slowly increase. Make sure you give alliances tech to them as well. Once the relations reach close then ask for an alliance. They should accept.

Now switch the trade to another empire (leave 1 route to keep the 1st empire happy) and repeat. You may need to occasionally give a small gift to the 1st empire as well.

Leave any empire which are opposite moral to you until the end. There is always the chance that one of your allies will declare war on them!

Paul.
