Beginner - Basics - what to build

Beginner - Basics - what to build

Basics - what to build

Hello All

I have played through the tutorials, read the manual, and played a game against the AI.

After analyzing the stats of the game I have noticed that I did things really wrong.

What I am looking for is a basic cookie- cutter receipe for how to start a game. What objects to focus on, when to start research etc.

I just need a general guidline, which I must have missed... the tutorials are great at teaching you what buttons to press, but the miss the boat with respect to strategy and how to play the game.

Any help is appreciated. I am not focusing on a single race, rather I am interested in learning how to govern the empire.

Thanks

Is there any reason for getting a cap ship yard so early? I usually start with a col. ship & two light frigs, jump to the nearest asteroid, then get the ship yard. While it's building, I colonize the asteroid (usually before the defenders are dead, since they can't damage it) and develop it. This lets me get some additional metal and crystal income going faster and lets you send your cap ship off to another planet bordering your HW.

Well, you're missing out on easy experience for the Capital Ship. I don't even build light frigates anymore. Just 2-4 scouts, grab the asteroids by himself and move in with a Colony ship after.

This lets me either get LRMs if I want to be more aggressive with TEC or just boost my eco.

I see your point, and you're probably right. I'll have to mess with it some, but this is how I see it. First, it does not require four lights to clear an asteroid. Two is enough. You could probably do it with one, but it would take stupidly long. I usually send in my col. ship before even clearing the system, after which I queue up the cap ship factory ASAP. By the time my first cap ship is out, I have a fully developed asteroid, my colony ship almost has enough antimatter to colonize again, and my first two light frigs are either already engaging militia in the next asteroid colony (which, repair or no, they can do easy enough) or waiting for the cap ship to take on a better defended planet. Also, there's plenty of early experience to go on. Two militia won't make a difference.

I'll try both builds and time them, to see how it goes.

Ok, never mind. My build is about the same speed, and you're a cap ship short. I'll back off now.

That's good--you're off to a better start than many who don't read manuals or do tutorials and then ask dumb questions on the forums.

Basically it just takes practice and experience. A few tips I can offer you, though:

Don't over-expand. Build up your economic infrastructure first. I generally like to build the capital that can colonize as my first (free) capital ship. It's not great at combat, but it can handle small NPC fleets and it makes early expansion easier.

But experience is the main thing. Just keep playing against AI until you get the hang of the interface and the units and tech tree for at least one of the races. Then jump online and get experience against other players.

Using the black market is also very helpful at early stages of the game. Often times you might end up with some asteroids near your starting planet, so the population won't be there right away to give you a signifigant increase in credits per second. but often times, especially if say you've got a volcanic planet in your posession you'll have an abundance of metal you're never going to spend any time soon. So sell a bunch off to the market and make some easy money, since early on you're going to be burning credits far faster than you can really make them. Don't do the same with crystal though, as typically it's more rarely found that metal, unless you're really lucky and start next to 2 ice planets.
