New skin pack in the works

With the final version of the game out, I am reworking the skin pack I made for the beta starting with TEC.  I know camo doesn't make much sense in space but I don't care :P

Camo kinda makes sense if you think of it more along the lines of confusing the enemy where the ship ends and starts.

Of course if that were the case since this is space the best camo would just be to make ships jet black or coloured in accordance to nebulae or whatnot.

WW2 ships had a trick for this, using ziz zag patters and whatnot.

I don't care either if it makes sense or not only if it looks badass. And from the look of your textures so far, they are badass! Can't wait for this :)!

Rhelamos - Camo makes no sense... while the "reality" of sins is nearly non existant... people don't track objects in space with "visual" scans...

Different types of sensor networks are employed... Detecting heat, energy, reflection (radar)... The OP was right about saying it makes no sense...

But the idea of modding visuals in this game is still a great idea and I hope He and others continue to do it.

I hope others start work on new model paces for future races... we have a VERY limited selection of 3... which are nearly identical anyway =(

Thanks! I tried a more nebula looking color scheme but it just ends up looking like a colorful melted popsicle. Not really going to put the fear in to the heart of the enemy looking that way. The lighting for those that like the colored skyboxes drowns out the color anyways. I'm looking at other schemes though such as ones close to the artwork on the loading screens for example midnight blue with red and white stripes or even the dark orange.

I will release it as a texture mod only when its done. I am modding other aspects of the game but I don't want to force them on anyone if all they want are the skins.

Actually, depending on the tech, visual scans might still be used. Especially if Heat, Energy and Electronic signatures are cloaked or at least screened against sensors. Hence a computerized visual scan might be employed as well looking for patterns and identifying it against a FoF database.

Heh, at which point camouflage would be actually contraproductive since it would fluctuate the ship's albedo, making it easier to spot against the starry background. The best camo in space is pitch black. But that doesn't look very pretty, does it. ;)

Anyway, nice work, looks great.

Maybe it's just the angles; but I hate the green one.

Tec should be more grungy and industrial feeling to it; not some specially prepared and painted piece of art.

I want my ships to look like something the Reavers would fly in Firefly
End of quote

I agree. Better yet, Reavers instead of space pirates. Make all of those space pirates look like Reavers!!!! That would make them all the more threatening (looking).

It's difficult getting the shade just right but i'll keep working on it. What looks good in the editing program is very different as to how it appears in game because of the lighting effects. If color shade is to light, it appears gray unless very close up and slightest bit too dark and you can't tell what color it is. It's a lot of trial and error to get it to look just right.

Some nice stuff. Can't not the artsy mods because they are what adds spice to a community.

Oh man that TEC carrier looks PIMP! Progress???

Life has been busy so I haven't done a lot more since last post. Right now I have the first version of the TEC Capitals done. I still need to go back and edit in the details. Here are a few screens in the mean time.

If you are talking about textures, then the _cl and _da on the end of the planet textures translate to the Light side(_cl) and the Dark side(_da). I assume its the same with all textures, so the side of the ship facing the sun displays a lighter texture than the one in the shadow.

A few questions:

1. Does altering the payer colour change the camo
2. Have you altered the skins for any other races
3. if not, why not

I haven't given up on creating these skins. I just haven't had much time to work on them. I do have a new one created today that came out half decent so it's up for download.

"This week on OVERHAULIN', we're taking a trip to the Trade Coalition for a 6-part special on the KOL battleship...

You should have seen the General's face when his flagship was gone!

.....All we did was cover it with a black drop-cloth when it went into eclipse with that moon.

We called the General, pretending to be 'galactic security' and told him one of the local militias must have ran off with it, but we could trace the hyperspace field lines to track it down...

We gave the general a scare when we brought a Derelict Battleship into his Fleetyards, and told him they must have taken it too close to the sun, there were scorch marks everywhere...

Those are battle scars. TEC don't have uber shields to soak up all that laser damage. Besides if you start flying around in a shiny new KOL people will start to think your an advent sympathizer.

File has now been updated to include a carrier skin.
