I'd love Tempest to bits if it wasn't for the horrible lack of volcanic worlds and overpopulation of ice planets. Ack.

maps with a couple of star systems, so you can establish your empire, end tech up so that the battles are between tougher units.

Maelstrom and Doppelgänger are cool. Otherwise Medium or Large Random maps so you have time to assemble an Armada to go hunting with.

Gateway is fun, although I have never entered the second solar system in multiplayer.

I made a customized Semi Random three star galaxy for three players, Each player gets a totally equal 15 Terran Planet star system with their home world. This allows crazy empire expansion followed by crazy huge fleet battles.

I play it with 2 random Hard AIs. So far so good. You can build as few or as many separate systems as you want 1 player each. Two was too easy for me, so I added one. With three I'm up against two hard AIs that both have time to build massive fleets. Pretty fun actually.

Custom in-game map created, 20 stars, 18-28 colonizable planets per star, 8-12 non-colonizable planets, no pirates, with neutral colonies set to maximum everywhere, only one player per star system.

Utterly massive map, running about 800 planets, with virtually every other planet in the map already colonized by neutral factions, and defended by neutral orbital defenses. It's a long-term commitment. :D

Random Maps are simply the best. They add to the mystery of space.

2v2 foreign systems one (4 small home stars + 1 big in middle)
3v3 Gateway or RAzor's for a middle speed game

:P

Actually, I really like maps that are 2v2v2 or 3v3v3 in design. I'll probably make all of my maps to this style.

I always avoid the one where your only separated from your neighbor by an ice planet. I really hate that map.

I played a customermised one called 'Chokepoint' on the downloads section. I am in the middle of a 5v5, 4 medium AI and me (all Tec) versus 3 Hard AI and 2 Medium (all Vasari).

It's an epic game, with all 10 fleets converging the 4 systems around the star, been going on for a few days now. I'd recommend it to anyone.

The last random map I tried looked like this:

My homeworld - asteroid - empty - Pirate Base - everything else

:(

I've been playing the premade small maps ever since.

Doppelganger and Systems of War. Nice size, secure bases plenty of time, and still plenty of battles.

Same

Systems of War is cool when you are battling over the middle system. It is advisable to have 3 fleets total when you are trying to conquer that portion.

fleet #1 to cover your home system

Fleet #2 to choke point the middle star

Fleet #3 to conquer the planets in the middle system (definitely need the cap ship that allows you to colonize to make this fast)

Definitely gets long and drawn out too once you start to get a lot of planets under your belt.
