No Campaign?

I have to say i'm a little suprised this game doesn't ahve a campaign.. Even empire at war managed to at least string a decent campaign together..

i was so excited for this game, especially after having waited so long since Homeworld 1 and 2..

this game is just crying for an epic single player campaign.

SupCom made the same mistake, the single player was nothing more than a glorified tutorial (but at least it had one i guess)..

ohh well, time to fire up the old win98 / 3dfx machine and play homeworld again, while waiting for the next epic RTS...  (it used the word Epic enough ont he back of the box, not epic enough though lol)

ohh well, i don't suppose i can un-reg my key so can pass it on to someone who might enjoy it?

4X games generally don't have campaigns. In fact, I can't think of one that does. Civilization? Nope. Master of Magic? Nope. Master of Orion? Nope.

I think you're missing the point of the game. All the games you listed are RTSes. Sins is not an RTS. It's a 4X game that happens to be played in real-time.

If you're seriously not going to play the game because it doesn't have some "campaign", then all I can tell you is do better research before buying games in the future.

its been stated even before release that it wasnt going to have a campaign...so the majority of us that were involved with the game before it came out already knew that so werent expecting one to begin with

Oh, and in regards to "epic": If playing a several day-long game on a huge map with 10 or more solar systems with a massive empire and huge fleets isn't "epic" to you, then you don't know "epic".

I am playing a single player, 5 medium AI's in a random large galaxy (50 grav wells, 3 systems), struggling to maintain an alliance and trying to predict where the dangers will come from.

I wiped out one opponent to gain the alliance with the demanding advent. Their demands are taxing but their usefullness is beyond question and enters the realm of indespensible... for now. That they need me to prove my loyalty, might and the syncronicity of my political aims with theirs is fully understandable. Just like the US does today with it's favoured treatment of Willing allies... no matter how different their culture may be. I now guard one wormhole instead of two to my treasure worlds, helping buff my offensive fleet's resources immensly.

The cold war with the other two major powers of the glaxy drags on, planets are changing slowly. Fleets are at their size limit and firefights deadly. My level 7 Mothership escaped with 24HP after one badly judged sortie. :( My races unique abilities are all that keep me in the game, I spend all day at work thinking of new plans. I have one week and 6 hours clocked on it so far and last night discovered the minow of the game, the 5 planet insignificant gnat of a TEC civ... is leading in Research.

THE HORROR

No campaign I have EVER played has been this EPIC, including Homeworld (1,1.5 and 2), Starcraft, Company of Heroes or World in Conflict (to name my favorites). And this is without cinematics or scripted events. It takes some effort, many lost or small games to get the basics down on the diplomacy, economy and battle tactics. But it's worth it.

But I suckled from MOO's teat as a wee teenager, maybe thats why I appreciate it and have trouble whinging about anything other than the lack of waypoints for rally points, slightly dodgey networking implementation (Which is almsot forgiven in that there is MP save) and a few minor other interface problems I have that shoudl ahve been covered in the tutorial if in fact they are problems that don't exist. Minor gripes compared to almost any other game I have ever owned.

Do kids these days even have an imagination? Maybe sins is too oldschool in that sense. Poor kids. Lucky most pc nerds are 30+ and can make their own legend in awesome sandbox games like this.

Actually, I am inclined to disagree. I would say that Sins is an RTS with strong 4x tendencies. That is to say it has all the game play mechanics of a standard RTS plus a number of amazing in real time though enimic for a 4x mechanics such as the tech tree, diplomacy and culture. It would be impossible to say that this game beats some of the 4x giants (galciv or civ4) in any of those area (Keeping in mind I think Sins is amazing). And while 4x tend not to have campaigns, galciv had a great one (more in storyline than in implementation) and civ4 had a number of cool senarios with set starts that added some well appreciated diveristy. To conclude, I can think of no reason why Sins should not have a camgaign and while I appreciate that the devs thought it a better allocation of resources to produce an excellent sandbox mode than a mediocre one with a mediocre campaign, now that the game is done I think a campaign would be an excellent avenue to pursue. (Either for the 1.10 update or a microtransaction download or the expansion) Alternatively how about providing the tools for the mod community to create some.
Thanks

No, I think improving the game should be their main avenue of pursuit, not creating some pointlessly linear campaign to satisfy people for 3 days. Seriously, how do you all expect them to patch a good campaign into a game? And why, when people mention campaigns, do they bring up wholly different (design wise), games like HW or C&c? Not referencing to anyone in this topic of course.

Oh, and Civ 4 didn't have campaigns; random start scenarios don't count.

Well avonnied if you think about it a campaign is really just the same game with a story behind it; really, just a string of scenarios. Why not write a story or think of one as you play...I would think it would be fun to narrate your own game.

And oh yeah go MOO. I don't want to even try and imagine how many hours I've sunk into MOO2. And we'll just forget about that "other" MOO game that should never have existed. Being a fellow MOO player I have to agree with doublethink and say that GalCiv2 is an incredibly good game and without a doubt worth your time and money. Plus, as you've undoubtedly seen, Stardock supports the game extremely well and actually cares about its customers/players and so it actually feels good supporting them by buying their games.

Most 4x games do not have campaigns even the semi-real time ones. So to add to the list: Sword of the Stars, Imperium Galactica, are 4x games with no campaign

The reason I agree that Sins should have had a campaign is due to the deep backstory. Oh sure, a full campaign isn't necessary, but they could have at least done something with the setup... I mean will we ever know if the TEC survive? Will the Advent get their revenge? What will happen when the Vasari's ancient enemy reaches them.

The first two questions can be answered by you playing the game, it's your choice whether they live or survive. The anicent enemies clearly won't be presented in this game.

Well personally prefer a good sandbox mode to a limited campaign - and, as with Gal Civ 2, Stardock have produced a superb sandbox in this game.

Having said that, it is unbelievably frustrating that the backstory gives no detail about who or what is chasing the Vasari - I mean presumably the Vasari must know, so the vague hints at 'something from their past' leads you to believe there must be more information, somewhere.

Though I bought the game for its sandbox mode, have to say that the backstory does seem to provide a very big 'hook' for a campaign - maybe in an expansion....
