Capital Ship Debris

I always thought the capital ships should leave more/bigger chunks of the ship they were, so I've made new types of debris and linked them to the ship that explodes. I did the Kol first and everything worked, I lowered the poly count of the sections to about 1k each, ofc this could be lower but this was done quickly for a test. Images below:

Only problem I see is that debris is randomly spawned on the ships death, so the front and back don't always spawn in the right place. It still gives a better battle aftermath I think.

That's pretty cool!

Looks very nice, good work. The last image looks very professional.

Are you doing this for all ships and station, or just Capital ships?

Some Caps leave pretty big chunks already.

What I would really love would be if the debris stays on the map. :)

- Uzii - : The idea was just to do capital ships but it could be done for everything that explodes and leaves debris I think.

Therlun: You can make debris last forever I think, just change the "AverageLifetime 300.000000" in the Debris.entity file for some huge number.

Sweet baby jesus!
Maybe you can add some small human-like characters who's blown out by the vacuum of space.
Anyway... It's a pretty good work so far.

Avarage debris time can be increased... but not everyone got a quad core equipped PC to handle ten of thousands poligons from debris.

hmmm... this is a very cool idea but on larger maps (several stars) with bigger battles wouldn't this add a lot of debris which means ur computer gets generally bogged down? If not then thats awesome!!  :D

Oohh this looks so cool! Can't wait for the rest of them! (Vasari ones are the only ones that spawn race specific UBER BITS now i think.)

I wouldn't have thought so. When the ship is alive it uses about 5k polys, when its dead the mesh is only about 2k, unless your bringing in capital ships faster than the debris is vanishing, the poly count is actually dropping on death.

Ideally I think you'd want smaller debris pieces: big enough (and detailed enough) to be recognisably 'the ass of a Kol' or 'the knobbly bit of a Mothership', but not big enough to be constantly driven through by other ships.

Excellent work.

Again, that's also saying that the debris life isn't altered to stay for a very long time. Could you imagine an ingoing battle with ships dying right and left and their debris remains constant?

Very cool work BTW.

Ok then thats AWESOME!!! But i guess keeping the debris floating around for a long time would eventually slow up computer down... but i think the eye candy is worth it!! Also does the debris "wander"? So will it eventually float around the gravity well/system?

not to be a downer, but right now at least, it looks kind of legoish, HOWEVER it is WAY better than the original, so keep up the good work!!!
