Do the AI players attack each other?

First let me say that i'm loving this game so far.  I don't normally enjoy RTS games but this one is different.

I've mostly been playing 1v1 vs the AI and having a good time.  But when I bump it up to 3 players though the AIs always seem to attack me and ignore each other.

Also, diplomacy seems to be mostly broken.  I can't carry out missions to gain favor with one AI because even as I'm doing that they are attacking me as well.

Basically when I'm playing with 2 AI players I feel as if I'm playing 2 on 1.  Am I crazy?

It depends.

If you put the AIs on different teams, and lock the teams, they will definitely fight.

If you put two or more AIs on the same team, and lock the teams, they will work together as allies and never fight each other, but they will fight other AI teams.

If you don't lock teams, diplomacy will be active in the game, and the AIs do seem to have a tendency to ally against you.

Yes, they do. I've had plenty of PvAIvAIvAIv... matches where AI opponents have gotten knocked out of the game by another AI.

Use three AI rather than two. In a four player game there is more scope to get at least one AI on your side.

Also, make an early start on the diplomacy. You need to do the "give me metal/crystal/cash" missions almost at the very start to have the best chance of a real alliance. If you wait too long the more difficult "kill X" missions come up. You ideally want a ceasefire before then so that your fleet can move around without offending your prospective ally by attacking any of his fleets it comes across. Killing the occasional scout won't kill your alliance prospects, but getting in the way of a full invasion fleet might well do.

I had a similar question some weeks back. I was in a 4 player FFA and it seemed like I was getting continually attacked by the AI, first on one flank then on the other. After a while it dawned on me that one of the AI players had been knocked out fairly early in the game and that my empire occupied the middle ground between the two remaining AI players. To get to each other, they had to go through me which resulted in the seemingly endless attacks.
