Walking into the studio owned by Ironclad Games was a strangely euphoric experience. Standing in front of me were four proud, smiling game developers in a space that would look right at home in a Douglas Coupland novel. I could tell that the team was riding on an emotional high; around the room I could see a full spread from their PC Gamer preview along with half a dozen magazines extolling the virtues of Sins of a Solar Empire, their debut title. Their enthusiasm was contagious; I had spent a week previous waiting for a hard copy of Sins to show up at my local Future Shop and had spent the week after that playing scenario after scenario. On February 19th, Jeff Sobol and I had the opportunity to visit the studios of Ironclad Games, developers of Sins of a Solar Empire. We met there with four co-founders of the team and had the chance to sit down with them for almost two hours, discussing everything from their influences to the lore of their debut smash hit. The above article is the first part of a two piece segment and we'll have some video up early next week.

I hope you enjoy the article, please feel free to let me know what you think.

The thing that really stands out to me is that the guys and gals at Ironclad took the small, tightly knit team format that everyone idolizes and prays to be in someday, and they make it work beautifully, if not outright better than many larger set development studios. It would be nice if they became an aspiration model for small to medium sized teams everywhere.

Doesn't hurt that they're also kickass people. ;)

Very nice interview in deed. It is always good to but a human face on developers. It pretty much is only possible with independents since the culture of large corporations almost always prevents such things due to the nature of the beast.
