How well will my computer run the game?

I meet the minimum requirements...but how well will it work?

Here are my specs:

2.1 AMD
768 MB of RAM
Windows XP sp2
NVIDIA GeForce 6600

Should I buy the game?  Will it be playable?  I plan on running it at 1024x768 resolution.

Fairly well most likely.

My opinion is not play any large/huge maps with lots of ppl, but otherwise it should be ok

That should run it fairly well i'd say. As stated before don't go overboard and play on huge maps with 10 players, but other than that it should run fairly well.

If you increase the RAM to 1GB or perhaps even 2GB it should run very nicely, with 768MB your memory will be the limiting factor in the size of games you can play.

I think your PC will do fine. Like Ronald suggested, I'd look into getting more RAM if you can. It'll not only help with the game but with just about everything else you do too. ;)

I have:

2.2 Dual Core AMD
2GB of RAM
Windows XP sp2
2 * NVIDIA 7-something GT's

I run on maximum detail (and force Anisotropic filtering on via the NVidia control panel) and the only time I've had a problem was watching a battle close up involving about 460 ships (460 is a conservative guess - I know had 160, and I know that the pirates had at least 300 ships by the time I got around to wiping them out).

I'm exaggerating when I say I was getting about 5 frames/second (I mentioned this in another thread), but it was probably somewhere in the region of 15 frames/second at that point. Playable, but not something I want to repeat.

So I think you will be fine. But not on larger maps and probably not while viewing larger battles.

I have a 2.6Ghz Athlon, 1GB ram, and a 9600Pro, and the game runs fine on mine.

go for ram

and if you have a fairly large HD with plenty of free space, try increasing the page file size. It will help compensate a bit for your ram and avoid a certain, issue at the same time.

For comparison

i have a 4(or 5 year old PC, i forget)

with:

P4 3.0 ghz HT processor
1gb of DDR ram(up till 2 years ago i had 1.5 but two of my 4 ram slots fried because of a power surge)
ATI radeon x800xl ALL-IN-WONDER videocard
and, my luxury piece, Creative Soundblaster X-FI Xtreme Gamer

and because i was running into the MINIDUMP error issue like a few others, i changed my page file(AKA virtual memory) to 4gigs, up from 2(my pain hard drive is 250 gb so its not an issue)

asside from my sweet sound card, my PC is pretty old stuff and i can run the game with most settings at high, albeit with some things turned off. But i can play a lagless game in a very large galaxy. Kudos to Stardock and ironclad for making this game accessible.

Page file does little. It's basically the backup for when you run out of RAM, storing RAM data on the HDD. Having a too small page file will usually just knock you back to the desktop with an OUT OF MEMORY error. It's much slower than RAM and with RAM prices so low, it's stupid not to go out and buy at least a gig.
