Odd drop in FPS before returning to norm.

During a singleplayer round of sins in systems of war I aquired 9 planets with a force of about 100 ships including 6 capital ships and a Novalith canon. At about and hour and a half into the game my frame rate drops form about 45-50 fps to about 15 during an intense battle. I figured this was normal and went into changing some of the settings to get a decent frame rate out of the game. After being unhappy with the results (a frame increase of about 2) I decided to live with the low fps for stellar graphics. All of a sudden my fps shoots back up to 45-50 fps, durring the same battle! I was so happy but could not figure out why this happened. I run only 4 other nessecary background applications, no antivirus software. I was not connected to the internet. I do not overclock.

System spec:

amd 3800 x2. ati x1950 pro 256 mb. 2 gigs of ram.

Did I by turning down my quality and then turning it back up trick the system into running more efficiently. I know this is not true but I would like it if my game did not drop in fps before returning to the norm. I love this game and running it on highest sttings at 45 fps is a dream.

It could be the text bug - when text appears on the screen the frame rate takes a hit. This has been fixed internally and will be in the next update.

I'm having odd fps drops too. The game really starts to chug during large engagements and I even dropped the settings to rock bottom.

A couple wierd things is that during the big battles, the game will slow down badly then speed back up after about 20 seconds from the start even at max settings. Also, my framerate just dropped badly during a somewhat small battle, 4 cap ships total & about 30 frigates. My AA & v-sync are also turned off.

It seems that when multiple special abilities are used at the same time, the game starts to slow but that's just my guess. Lastly, as best as I can tell, there was no on-screen text.

I can post a dxdiag if needed but here's a general rundown. Thanks for any help.

Clean new system with XP Pro, no overclocking, no backround apps running, and latest drivers as far as I can tell.

I've been having some frame rate issues also and discovered that it was related to my update rate. when I go from 1X to 2x it drops a little but as soon as I go to 8X my FPS drops to about 5 and the scrolling is super slow. Go back to 1X and everything jumps right back to normal. Hope they fix this. I absolutely love this great game.

I'm not sure if this is what you were experiencing, but I found an ingame situation that nukes my FPS. Basically, the advent have these ships that create a bubble around the fleet. When they are in play and I zoom in (especially when there are multiples of these ships) my framerate goes to heck. It is the only time I have ever experienced a drop in framerate. I have tested this over several games and its always the same situation. The advent come in with their bubble ships and my FPS goes to heck. The solution I've come up with is to click the planet in a zoomed out state and perform all combat via the empire window thing on the left. From there, I use my fleets to attack those ships specifically and, when they are all destroyed, I zoom in and finish up the rest of the battle.

I hope this helps.

I have a (heavy) FPS drop when I play in window mode (ATI X1950 Pro) and open a Menu or some Pop-Up is displayed. Hope that is related to this and fixed soon. There is no such problem playing fullscreen!
