Maybe a bug? Can anyone else confirm

I started a new game today, the last map on the small maps selection.  It's a 3 person map with 18 or 19 planets, anyways I chose to play the Tec and let the computer handle the AI for the Advent and Vasari.  I selected the same icon for the Advent and Vasari but gave them different colors.  It appears that the Advent and Vasari where allied for the game till my eventual demise.

Does the AI sometimes make alliances early on and if so how can I tell if they are allied?  I was thinking that by giving them the same icon albeit with different colors causes them to somehow work together.

Has this happend to anyone else?

if you lock the teams they won't ally... lock teams is an option you set before creating the game

You can't tell who the AIs are allied with unless of course you get lucky and spot 2 AI fleets in a grav well not fighting :)

The AI are stupid jerks and if you don't do their impossibly hard missions at the start of a game they will beat the living crap out of you.

Lock teams or play MP.
