To Explore or not to Explore, that is the question

(NOTE: If you're an LRM spammer and you're looking to win the game within the first 20 minutes, and need to know the location of the enemy home planet then ignore the following)

After playing more of the game, I'm even more convinced that scouting in the INITIAL PHASES of the game is completely irrelevant. Instead, my goal is to capture all the immediate surrounding planets as quickly as possible.

The first ships I build are colonizers. The number of colonizers I build depends on how many surrounding planets are around my base planet. They need time to build up antimatter, so build these ships first. I also build the most powerful capital ship (not mother) and light frigates.

Within the first 5 to 6 minutes of the game, I have built the largest fleet possible allowed by the initial crew points. I then invade a planet (any planet). I lose very few frigates since I'm attacking with a relatively large initial fleet.

With this method, I can capture 3 surrounding planets in less than 15 minutes while keeping my casualties very low.

In the early phase of the game, there is no need to waste time or resources on scout ships if your goal is to simply capture the surrounding planets in a hurry.

This is with game speed set on FAST.

BTW...Any way to prevent enemy ships from scouting

Yes. Get a choke point(the star's gravity well, if you own an entire system) and put 2-3 carrier cruisers or 1-2 hangars with Fighters there. They should be able to knock out a casual Auto-Exploring scout in 1-2 passes(~15 seconds). Microed scouts would probably be forced back the way they came. Massed scouts would be a really weird occurrence, and would only be around if the enemy is trying to use Timed Explosives or Martyrdom.

Scouting is possible in ways other than using Scouts, however. The Serevun Overseer(Mobile Phase Detection), Revelation Battlecruiser(Clairvoyance), Eyes of the Converted tech, and Highly Attuned Sensors tech allow the Advent and Vasari to use more advanced, more expensive, and harder to stop methods of espionage.

1. Scouts don't really provide benefit over a light frig for scouting purposes int he first few minutes of the game. Information is power, but only when you can capitalize on it.

2. The ideal build is probably more like ~2 light frigs (as many as you have adjacent jump nodes), 1-2 colonizers, and then fill out the rest of the ~4 light frigs you'll want to take out neutral defenders.

If you want to build scouts immediately thereafter, or ~4 mins later? Sure, you can do that. But for the early part of the game you'll have established a nice quick 2nd colony.

Wasted research on one or two techs if you didn't need volcano/ice3)Nope, because I'm going to colonize 7 or 8 planets in the first 20 minutes of the game. That technology will be needed. Odds are in your favor. If you do colonize two planets immediately, they will actually drain your economy until you can upgrade themNope, because you simply cash in the metal that you are producing to raise the cash to upgrade the planets. If your enemy finds you at this point you are in a lot of trouble.Odds are the enemy will not find you soon enough to do much damage. Besides, after the six frigates I am researching Capital Ship crews and building a hoard of capital ships.

At the 20 min mark any half decent LRM spammer that uses scouts will be knee deep in your A HOLE.

Scouts can also get into a jump faster and are not affected by anything that slows jumping.

Not to mention.. the best thing of all is you can right click their auto-explore and never have to pay attention to them again.

I always build as many scouts as phase routes into my home planet. Then explore outward. I like to know in what order I want to colonize stuff.

I always colonize outward away from the sun first, so I can get that one out of the way. This make it easier to sweep forward (towards the enemy) in a continuous motion to conquer everything else.
