Editing MESH files - HELP!!!

Editing MESH files - HELP!!!

editing old ships

Has anyone successfully edited the prexisting MESS files in Sins?  I want to edit the original ship designs, not completely make new ships.  I have installed the SoftImage 3d software as directed by the develepers in the Mod Tools help file, but I still can't get the original ship MESH files to load up, hence I cannot edit and change them.  Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

That is why we need Ironclad to give the ok or the original files, and once this happens. I'm sure the mod community will explode with new mods, especially once the particle editor comes out along with the completed forge tools.

Diresaint,
Go to the downloads section, and in the section of the Mod tools, there are links. One of these takes you to the two huge PDF's, where Ironclad walks us though using XSI. It is REALLY helpful.

I am glad that you found it. My work is now continuing on. Hopefully Ironclad will release those XSI files to make things easier.

Once again,

"Q. Does the Iron Engine support modding?
A. Absolutely. Ironclad fully endorses the modding of its games for non-profit purposes. The Iron Engine is completely data-driven and is supported by the Forge Tool Suite. Modding instructions and the Forge Tool Suite will be provided."

The game was sold on the promise of the ability to mod ANY part of it. We were even promised a full suite of tools to do it with. If you can figure out how to use the original ships there is nothing that Ironclad or Stardock will object to. There is nothing illegal about modding anything in this game, which is why I got it.

Now about those tools....

Exactly.
I bought this game with the premise of being able to "easily" modify it.
But, left sadly disappointed, and frustrated over and over again.
If only we had those mod tools, the actual program, that we were promised....

As long as you give credit to Ironclad and Stardock Games as a copyright, I'm pretty
sure you can bring stuff in and out to other games. Most mods don't need a consent from
the game developers (can you imagine the pain) to export stuff into other games or modify
their models/textures/sounds ect ect. Generally, if they release a SDK for their game,
they are giving you permission to do whatever you want with the game.

The only thing you need absolute consent for is modifying other people's work and
putting it back into the community. Universally its frowned upon to take credit for
other people's hard work which you would have made very minor alterations compared
to the actual work it took to bring the mod into the game itself. Its also just an act
of courtesy to ask the creator of the mod permission for you to release the mod. If you
edited the mod and just kept it on your computer, thats fine, but never release it in
the community unless you give proper credit to the author. Some modders require you to
contact them personally to get permission, others just ask for credit if you mod it. So
its just best to read the readme file that came with the mod itself.

I'm not sure if this community agrees with this method or not (I'd ask the veterans of the
community first), but if the person who requires personal contact (IM Messenger, email ect
ect), has been inactive in the community for an extended period of time (given that you
tried all you could to contact him of course), it is almost okay to just go ahead and
modify his or her own work. Why? Because its a bit stupid to ask people to get permission
from you, then go inactive (for whatever reason), for a few years or so (when the
community is buzzing with activity). My own community (Star Trek Bridge Commander) agrees
with this idea, but you should ask some of the more experienced people about this before
attempting to do anything like what I'm suggesting.

Sorry for the long post lol. I just wanted people to make sure they know what they can and
can't do with mods. I hope this can help some people. I also know this post is a month
old, but I felt like I should get this across.

What?

I thought it was obvious.  You're one to talk about useless necrothreading.

I still don't get what you mean...All I did was say how aggravating and inconsiderate it is.

Check the links at the top of the thread here.  Lots of links and help there.

@Fred....

You have to be kidding.  Banhammer didn't hit hard enough?  I'd tread very lightly here if I was someone.

Just going through old posts...and I saw this thing get active again!  I thread back from the dead!!!!

Anyways...I am a lot more experienced now then when I posted this almost 5 years ago!  I'll help out any way I can, but do check out all the literature out there.  The developers made PDF's, and there are tons of tutorials and converters out there that work with a wide array of 3D modeling programs out there.  I am still using 3D MAX personally, though I am on 2011 version now.
