Early start up

Ok i've played this game since its been released and i'm starting to run into a problem, most of you have probably noticed it too...

last game i played i was TEC and i was going down the economic tree so i could get more income and thus, create more ships, so i took planets with light frigates then i ran into my worst problem to date, as i encountered my rival he did the illuminator spam! I sent my fleet but they do the usual capital ship targeting so I had to pull it back, which left my frigates open, i tried to use garda flaks but as you can expect the spam was too much and i lost...

Is there any damn way to survive an early spam of LRM-type frigates without completely dedicating your development to it?

Scout him. If he is making temples of Hostility early, you will know. But I don't see how he can have that big of an income to totally overwhelm you. Yes flak would have been the logical counter. Thou it doesn't work as well on Illuminators as it does on LRMs or Assailants.

LRM or Assailants kill illums quite good in early game. Flaks also help but as Astax wrote they are more a counter to LRM then Illums.

The thing is that you start with light frigates. The counter to light frigates are LRM. So there is really nothing else to buy since everyone has to counter at least a few light frigates in the early game.

After that, a mixed fleet of flak and LRM seems to be the way to go.

Scouting is important. I occationally toss a suicide scout into my opponents homeword just to see what he's building (saw 3 Kols being built once, and I was ready and won). If your opponent is massing ships, expanding fast = death to you. . .

Alternately, look at some of HuntingX's early game stuff for TEC. You should be able to out LRM rush him before he even gets going with a larger Illuminator spam. And micro micro micro
