Alternate Resource Maximizers

So I am completely new to this game, and so far I think it is awesome.  I have one question, however.

How does one improve resource income without colonizing huge amounts of asteroids?  Is there a way to upgrade an asteroid or planet's income?

In small to medium games there really is no way.
You can upgrade each planet to get rid of the "underdevelopment" money bleed; and depending on your race you can get upgrades to your crystal and metal extractors. There are also trade hubs to get you more credits and orbital refineries to help maximize the crystal and metal you bring in... but still that will leave you short unless you go out and get all the roids you can.

Is there anything wrong with colonizing asteroids? They usually have several resource asteroids orbiting them and while they don't provide a lot of credits even once upgraded to maximum habitation, they're easy to take in the early game and provide the metal and crystal you need to build fleets to conquer more habitable planets as well as buy the upgrades for those planets.
