LAG

Ok i go onto servers and i lag like crazy. I have cable internet and Vista so u should be able to handle the graphics. I play a couple other games online like CSS and i can play on 40 man servers without any lag. So can some one try to help me make the lag go away.

The lag depends on the path between you and the servers/the people you play against.  Try this:

Start -> Run -> Type "cmd" and hit enter.  In the command window type "tracert ico.stardock.com".  If there's any hops that don't respond or that have really high numbers (>200ms) that's the problem.  Note that you probably will start timing out once you hit our firewall, but that's normal.

start menu on task bar---->next to words all programs, or in the genral area of it is the word "run" click on that...

when the box opens in the area that allows for text type cmd and then hit enter

Or try "Windows Key (The one with the windows logo on it) + R". This brings up the Run Dialog. Then type "cmd" and click "Ok". In the new window, type "tracert ico.stardock.com".

As the game is peer to peer, your ping to ICO itself doesn't mean much (only affecting the lobby, really)--it's your ping to the other players in the game that matters.

whats your advertised internet connection speed?

maybe that will help us get some insight into your problem

if its a 10 mb connection you shouldnt be getting that much lag ...

@ dracula7899

Firewalls, especially those SPI-type firewalls on some crappy cable/dsl modem/router combo's or soho routers (dlink, netgear, linksys, etc.) fragment game-data (especially for p2p connections). DISABLE them.

Other firewall software (other than the Windows Firewall which works fine with SINS) also costs network transport "overhead" which means it will increase latency.

Disable all (except for the windows firewall) firewalls and try again.

Also, If your cable/dsl mode isn't JUST a modem and also happens to be acting as a router you will see increased latency in p2p gaming due to "stricter" NAT controls.

Please read my newest guide linked-to from the bottom of the "Technical FAQ" in the sticky in the "Technical" forum.

thanks,

the Monk

Weird I seem to only have windows firewall. I realy wonder what is making my lag???
you have 10meg download but you most likly have 756k upload.. so that will slow you down as well, also open all your ports as this will allow you to reseave more date at any one moment and if you have a voip detatch it from the network.. I have to detatch my vontage router or it kills me big time..

are there any issues with nvidia 8600 256 ram cards that we know off
Reply #21 Top

Hop 10 had issues, but yeah, overall it's not bad looking and once you get a game going your connection to ICO doesn't really matter.  We'll see if we can improve this in some way, though.

8600 cards should be fine. You can play at pretty nice settings (High). That's what I have here at the office. ;)
