Destroyer class? And Mines and Minefields and Minelayers!

I was thinking it would be cool to have a destroyer class in the game.  Destroyers are bigger then frigates but smaller then cruisers.  There are 5-6 extra spots on the Frigate bar for future ships, could put them in there.

Ideas are

-War Destroyer, the first true military vessel designed by theTec, no more of the civilian ships converted for military duty.  This ship would be like the Cobalt Frigate except slighly bigger, slighter more powerful (10-20 percent)

-Heavy Scout Destroyer, Larger scout class ship with better recon abilites and the ability to take a beating and mix it up with other frigates and destoyers. Maybe give it a temporary ability to hide in a system and observe and direct fire for missile frigates only LRM's

-Mine Layer class Destroyer, weaker ship but it has the ability to lay minefields, perhaps 20-30 space mines per load

I want free cake and ice cream when I play, but it's not gonna happen...

Yes my brain feels like oodles and boodles of poodles eating noodles!

I actually agree with you, Sins needs a few more ships. Personally I think maybe an interceptor type frigate (high damage, fast speed, low range and armor) to attack close ships, and maybe destroyer types already mentioned, but I like faster ships better than slow behemoths.

Basically what you are describing is Homeworld. I keep forgetting how great those games were.

The problem in sins is a "frigate" is really more like a corvette (in homeworld speak). The cruisers that sound "bigger" don't seem any really different than frigates. The cruiser class should have bigger, stronger more expensive ships (I miss the ol' ION beam frigate) which would give it the ION beam of a Capital ship, but with out all the fire support so it would have to be used with support ships.

Yet I know these designers didn't want this to be an RTS with Micromanaging, it's just that what I want, but nobody has done one to speak of worth a darn since Homeworld.

The minelayer corvettes were great as they were a strong way to setup a block without keeping ships there. I find I'm hauling fleets around on long jumps because the fixed defenses aren't powerful or mobile enough.

In addition, the fighter ad bomber counts seem rediculous. a few ships, I guesss due to performance issues. A carrier should hold 10 fighters/bombers.

I would love to see each race with 1 SuperCruiser (i.e. Super Star Destroyer). Big bucks, slow, expensive, but if it shows up, things get quite in a hurry. A supercruiser should also be able to manufacture frigates in the field

a minelayer > mine structure. dead asteroid with no tactical slot or magnetic cloud whatever could be mined.

Destroyers usualy are escorts of bigger ships or they work in pair to scout for subs.
Maybe you could make make more powerfull capitals, then actual cruiser class to be the role of actual capitals, and destroyers as actual creuisers.
So you set everything one notch more. I see destroyers as a litter better than a frig, and lower than a cruiser, with maybe 1 or 2 specials.

One could make a ship in size between cruiser and Cap ship. Then give it a limited level bar. Like Cap ships can reach level 10 Destroyers can reach level 5. This would max out there abilities. This way you could get a bigger ship earlier on after your first Cap to help take some of those planets that have a fleet of 5-7 ships guarding it. As destroyers they would have support abilities to help defend Cap ships. Be something nice to see.

As to destroyers being below cruisers, depends on what Sci-Fi you watch. Babylon 5 Omega-Class destroyers were above Hyperion Heavy Cruisers in both size and status. They we're the ships of the line and we're only replaced by Warlock-class Destroyers after the civil war.

In Andromeda she was rated as a heavy cruiser, and listed as one of the most powerful vessels Pre-Fall.

Mines would be an awesome addition! Of course, we'd also need minesweepers in addition to minelayers...

Isn't Minesweeper already built into Windows? ;)

The mine ideas are good here and something to suggest to developers. It would add some variety to the game play, although balancing things and making sure it doesn't get too complex will be the key to making this fun.

We used to use some poor slob who pulled the short straw as the minesweeper in Homeworld :)

You drive your frigate near the mines to attract them then run like hell until they blow you up but you've pulled them away from your lane of traffic :)

I was actually envisioning that the mine layers would lay thin narrow belts of mines.
End of quote

That sort of minefield would simply be bypassed by people using the 3D movement features to go over or under it. The most practical way do do mines with the present engine restrictions (including the one that says defensive buildings all go on the same plane) is to treat mines like strikecraft with a self-destruct for area damage. Then make modified "hangars" and "carriers" that spew them out. You'd need to have them autobuild too I think.

I'm actually quite keen on mines in wargames, although their use in real wars is something we should all be against. Real mines cause most of their damage to civilians and can do so for decades after the war is finished. Even if the mine-laying side is responsible enough to attempt to pick them all up after the war... well, that costs them a truly unbelievable amount per mine and their taxpayers would probably prefer not to have to choose between crippling children in a peaceful former enemy land and paying for hospitals in their own country.
