Research question from a Newbie

When finishing research, are the results implemented automatically? 

Do weapon upgrades effect ships previously built or only ships built after that? 

Do you have to create designs incorporatings the improvements?  etc,etc

1. Yes.

2. All ships : previous & future ones.

3. No. There is no Ship Design in that game.
