Mod Request: ACTUAL Capital Ships

Does anyone else find that, as capital ships go, the current ones don't really seem to fit the bill? Now, I know nothing about spaceship lore (or even naval warships) but... When I hear capital/flagship, I think of something like a Super Star Destroyer. Can we add -actual- capital ships?

Eve Online has an interesting system in that they have (in order from smallest to largest) frigates, cruisers, battlecruisers, battleships, then capital ships: carriers, dreadnoughts and titans. Everything is pretty much as it sounds:
dreadnoughts are siege vessels: not the best against smaller ships but best at demolishing structures and other cap ships.
Carriers: Duh.
Titans are naturally the omgwtfpwned ships with their ridiculous defenses and huge AoE attack (aka doomsday weapon).

Im not saying 'hey lets turn sins into eve', but can we follow their ship classification a little bit?

In my opinion, I think the current cap ships make for beautiful Battleships or Battlecruisers. However, can we make ships that dwarf the current ones? Mmmmmm nothing would make me quiver more than watching a -giant- ship warp into a system and start punishing people.

Dreadnoughts could replace the siege ship class altogether since (as I understand it) theyre not used too much anyhow (ugh thatd be sexy to see a giant ship wreck a planet with huge missiles, artillery or beams). I dont think it makes much sense how the current cap ships can deal so much damage to the planets. The ships themselves just dont seem to be big enough to deal sufficient surface damage.

Carriers could actually field more fighters than the current ones. They should have no weapons but perhaps have handy repair abilities or something.

We dont even need to incorporate a Titan-type vessel unless someone wanted to spend alot of time balancing the thing.

God dammit, I wanna see some giant ships with big flashy weapons!

I uploaded an Eve ship scale sheet to give people an idea of what I mean when I say dwarfing other ships :P You can't even see a frigate on the image because these ships are so gigantic. Cruisers (which I presume just about every Sins ship to be) are sooorta visible, but battleships (our current capital ships) are basically the smallest visible ships... But looking at this shet, Its very easy to see a dreadnought sized ship (the second largest ships generally) absolutely ruining a planet or installation in space. Lord I hope a ship that size is introduced.

Rather than requesting it, why don't you do it? The instructions and tools are in the download, and there's a free version of XSI available to modders.

Interesting proposal, some larger more powerful ships (probably costing 3-5 captial ship slots) could make for an intersting late game addition to spice things up.

(A Sins to Eve total conversion mod woudl be really neat as well now that I think about it)

Hah.. I cant model to save my life. :'( Trust me- Ive really really tried but it's just over my head. :NOTSURE:

I know that feeling, plus for any large ambitious mod (adding in more than one or two ships) Trying to model and texture all that by yourself, plus all the coding etc.. will take months at least.

Generally if you want to see larger captial ships, you might have better luck trying to pull togther a team to work on a mod based around a popular theme (Like Eve online, Starwars etc..) since the popularity will draw in more modders willing to put their time and effort into making it all happen.

(Incidentaly if you do ever start a Eve mod for Sins I'll be happy to add my coding skills to your efforts.)

An Eve mod would certainly be interesting to see, as well as the late game Titan idea, praise and high fives would be neccessary.

Currently, the modders have hit a wall trying to get past the UI limitations of simply adding more capitals. The existing 5 can be replaced, and you can make models be as big as you want, but the UI does not automatically overflow to the next row for ships 6-10, and nobody's been able to figure it if we can make it.

EVE has too many ships by now to have in Sins. Hell, they have as many classes of ships as we have ship slots :P

I haven;t played Eve in about 3-4 years now, but I know what you mean, even back then there were a lot fo different classes.

Possibly a potential work around would be to have more than two types of factories? A frigate factory, a destroyer factory, a Cruiser factory etc..

Then one can narrow it down to 3-5 ships per factory?

I recall a few unsuccessful attempts to add more factories :( Have not personally tried, though.

Maybe a more appropriate term is "super Capital ship"

I'm not sure you're appreciating quite how large the existing Cap ships are. Some of them have 10,000 crew or more. Most Cruisers have several hundred crew (for perspective, the Enterprise in 'classic' Trek had 430 crew).

very interesting. thanks for that info. i was always under the impression the enterprise had tens of thousands... at least in ST: TNG.

by the way, it always seemed ridiculous to me soldiers looked so flaming carebear in star trek... not to mention wesley crusher's pansy outfit with the rainbow pin.

ST:TNG's Enterprise has a combined crew/passenger capacity of 1014.

No, I'm not a Star Trek geek, but I am a professional modeler, and some of my designs are flying around in the Star Trek universe.

The "capitol ships" in this game fit the bill just fine. No reason to go trying to rename things to fit an entirely arbitrary naming convention without knowing the principles on which such a thing should be based.

They look carebearish because they are on a continuing mission of raining flaming phaser death where no man has rained flaming phaser death before! Its a noble and tranquil pursuit. If you want soldiering, go to Klingons. Sure they can shoot... but can they retain a moral high ground while turning a bunch of ugly aliens into so much molten slag? I think not! :p

Heh.. I mean, we dont need like, a dozen different ship types like Eve has but at least in the end game, Id -love- to see "super capital ships" as Bubb suggested. That or make planet sieging ships bigger and more intimidating (eve dreadnought).. Just bring like, 2 instead of 10.

I mean, who's to say whats a capital ship and whats a cruiser in this game when it comes to the crew. Just as a casual player, Id love to see something bigger and more intimidating than what we've currently got.

To OP if your looking for size, compare the size of the star destroyer or the SSD to the planet and the compare the sizes of the capital ships in SINS, IM pretty sure that the sins capital ships are BIGGER.

What about if they'd mix dread lords in to the fray witch gives you the ability to create your own ships and size and then add hardpoints for weapons. wouldn't that be easier then anything.???

Mod would be the way to go, this a similar thing was discussed back in beta and the devs promptly shot it down.

If i remember right the ships in sins are actually to SCALE with the planet.

this picture might help

If they're in scale with the planet then a frigate is the size of a small country, and fighters are around star destroyer size, which whilst possible since the ships are huge when you look at the fine details, still seems a bit vast.
