AI

It looks like several other people share my opinion that the AI is too harsh against the player.  I enjoy a good battle as much as the next guy but my god!  Lets us develop our system some.  There is little strategy involved when all you do is constantly battle the AI.  This game would be much more fun if it had some features besides fight the machine.

Yea I agree. If you try and play anything beyond low level medium it becomes impossible within an hour of play. Seems like the AI is coded to expand until it meets another AI player, then build up massive fleets and send them all after the non-AI player.

I tried a 6 player game this morning against 5 random AI players and within 1.5 hours or so I had 5 huge fleets at my borders... each with 2-3 battleships and 10-20 frigates & cruisers. It's an impossible situation.

The AI alone, or even in locked teams of decent groups isn't all that hard, from my experience (I'm looking forward to 1.03, AI improvements are really needed in some areas). But it's when you try to play not just a Skirmish style like in a normal RTS, but something more akin to a Civilization 4x type game with unlocked teams that things go astray.

Playing like that, how most people play a tradition 4x game, it becomes very difficult after not very long due to the AI's irrational rage at warmblooded creatures. Maintaining an alliance with even one AI player is quite hard, and inevitably you're at war with all of them, and they seem content with ignoring each other and just going after you.

There's really little point in even doing unlocked teams, because ultimately it will turn into AI vs Human, it just saves headaches and annoying mission requests to not even bother unlocking them. If you want a free-for-all type game, locking teams seems to help a bit, or just doing a locked team game.

Sounds like you're playing on unlocked teams. If you want a FFA you need to lock the teams, otherwise the computer will 'out-diplomacy' you and likely end up in a war against you. Unlocked FFA is really only viable with 3 or 4 players (2 or 3 comps), and a relatively small map, at present.
