Late Game Fighting

need help in strategy against late game fights

I would like some help on how to fight in the late stages of the game where both you and the opponent(s) have a maxed out fleet.  It seems that whenever it comes down to this stage, I'll have a larger fleet and i'm decently up the research tree but it seems that the games will always end up either in a stalemate or with me on the losing end.

I play Vasari, I expand early, I go for Dark Fleet, I upgrade my Fleet logisitics when I need to in order not to waste resources, I have my mining research maxed, and I have 2300 fleet capacity that's maxed. I SHOULD have an advantage.  I just can't finish those late game fights :/

REPLAY

Above is a 7 person 11 star system FFA (someone dropped early) that I was in (I'm Rienke) and in it I was in the Empire Lead for the most part and the Military Lead for the entire game.  When it finally reached the last battle, I was unable to eliminate my opponent.  We were both sending what we could into battle and it seems he was winning towards the end.

3 points that may have affected that situation:

1) There was a constant bug where I'd order a fleet to move to another star system but they'd get "stuck" at the star they were at.  Didn't matter how long I'd wait or how close they were to the star, a fleet would just randomly think they'd have to move closer to the star before they could go to the next system.

2) I shoulda been more aggressive but the above glitch made things a little hard for me :/  I still think if I had been able to attack his homesystem like originally planned, I'd have won.

3) When I attempted to focus fire kill his capital ships (He had about 5 originally) I only managed to kill his lowest level one (6?) and failed every other attempt.  Why wasn't I able to kill his capitals?

Anyway, I know those three things gave enough time for my opponent to build up a proper retaliation but it doesn't change the fact that I couldn't kill his fleet :/  Any tips?

Umm if a mod sees this can they move this thread to strategy?

I have yet to watch the replay but before I do a few tips.
1)Don't use the "Auto" feature on the Cap ships abilities. If you use them yourself I am sure you can find a strategic way of using them instead of the "first thing I see I shoot" that auto seems to use.
2)Support ships. I'm not sure how well Vasari support ships work end game (they are strong in single star games) This requires a lot of attention because you need to see the target that is going to get hit, time it so when its shields are down you use it. Since most frigates and heavy ships die in a second late game this is only really usefull for keeping your Caps alive for a while longer.(its the first support ship you get, I don't remember the name of it, it boosts Hull Points of targeted ship) You should also use this one manually because I have watched them on auto and they do nothing >_> Your enemy most likely used support ships.
3)Use long range ships (assiliants) They seem to be more effective at taking down Caps if they are in large groups since they do massive amounts of damage at once. It can throw the enemy off from using support abilities on it.
4)Be sure to target the most usefull Cap ship. It is most often the support Cap. For example for Advent it will either be the Mother ship or the Carrier. The mother ship for its ability to aoe repair and its ability to add aoe damage to your fleet. The carrier for its Mirror image ability.

I am watching replay now. The bug you speak of is due to Z axis galaxy placements. If you move your ships on the Z axis towards the system you wish to jump to, they will be able to jump. This is what a person told me, I never experienced it first hand.

I watched the whole replay and it seems incomplete. There is no battle between you and anyone else. Also you built no tradeports, you had an income of 7 credits a second 2 hours into the game, and you built total of 10 support cruisers. Your death is not unexpected.

How does one get a fleet size up to 2300 as Vasari? I have seen this posted somewhere else but can't find it now. Sorry, to hijack this thread...

Civilian research tech that increases their max fleet cap by 15% after 2 research ranks.

I will have to check into that, I believe I have all items researched but have only been able to go slightly over 2000. You don't recall what Civilian tech it was?

I can't remember the name of it now, but it's the one that looks like a broadcast tower with ripples around it :P Middle research category, same place as the phase gate stuff :P

Make sure your game is updated to 1.02, before that it was still capped at 2000 even with the tech.

that may be it then... I still have the original game and probably will for awhile as the computer I have the game on is not connected to the internet. Thanks for the feedback!
