If I install the 1.02 update, will my saves from the vanilla version of the game refuse to play because of the update?

Your save games will still work fine.

I really hate getting 50-50 odds.

Can I get more people saying it's save or unsafe?

Saves will almost certainly break between versions, due to tweaks to stats and game mechanics. It is always advisable to wrap up any games in progress or abandon them before patching.
