tristan now thats a can lol. I just wanna know basic info start to finish and maybe a lil intermediate like what software to download so we can create the ships/whathave you and then import to game. Texturing programs things like that. If i am still not coming clear, how did you start. I would luv to creat a whole new race and then modify them into the game (ships and all)

thanx. :) The edit button seems to be gone lol. Tristan would you know what software also allows the importing of 2d images like i have a few 2d images of ships 2-4 side views and wanted to implement it in a 3d converter and looking online i guess it doesnt understand what i am asking for. I have Macross/Robotech ships i would like to convert and then import and attach to the game if thats clear. And ya take all the time you want i am still w8 on galaxy forge

first off the most basic sins model questions answered all in one tutorial such as:

1. can you open/edit the in game ships and give them more emitters, resize/scale them etc... and what programs are required to do that. (step by step would be great).

2. what standard formats can be imported into the game without having to go through various converters?

3. A list of requirements for a new ship model to work in game (e.g texture/mesh/weapon/projectile/race/research/UI/HUD information....basically a list of all files that need to be altered...clearly explained preferably with pictures....:)) and a list of standard formats (if any) that can be imported for each.

4. lastly and probably most importantly. assume the person reading it has absolutly no knowledge of the programs what so ever. the tutorial should be able to be followed by anyone and include the most complex and varied ship design (or at least small examples of every aspect in one ship). Once completing the long project step-by-step they should be able to build more basic trim down designs themselves.

obviously not expecting it in the first edition but eventually it should include adding a new race, research and ship to the game not just changing an existing one.

and i'd like to say thankyou in advance for making it easier for complete novices like myself to add content to a great game......and for your patience reading what turned out to be a longer post than i expected :)

Even experienced modders like myself who know next to nothing about XSI would appreciate this. Ive been trying to self teach myself, but any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm very interested in this. If I can model/texture/add joints(hardpoints) in Maya it would speed up my workflow to lightspeed. Are you aware of any file formats that transfer mesh/texture/joint info to XSI from Maya (.fbx, etc.)?

Thanks in advance for the upcoming tutorials.

I'm not sure if xsi mod tool supports .fbx, but I know it supports obj. adding Locators (nulls) in XSI is really easy. Not sure obj exports those.

Excellent, thanks for the info tristan. I didn't realize an XSI null is equivalent to Maya's locater. My fear was that it was more closely tied to rigging and had some strange orientation requirements (z down the bone, etc.). Now I'm even more excited to see the upcoming tutorials. Adding nulls and parenting them in XSI seems easy enough, .obj ftw.

I love all the expertise on this forum. Apparently this is where the interweb concentrates its talent.

Here is the softimage website with a whole bunch of FREE "getting started videos along with some tips and tricks etc. It also has links to various tutorial sites.

36 vids in "First Contact, and 42 vids in "Tips and Tricks", as well as another 40 or so vids in the "Production Series"

It also has forums, self help files, among other areas on the site for your assistance.

Enjoy!

Gidday People.

Got to say to Blair and the crew that you have made an awesome game here that has got me interested in modding again, so i have downloaded the XSI mod Tool and am hard at work trying to figure it out, So i and it looks like a hell of a lot of other people are very much siting on tender hooks waiting for some tutorials aimed at sins to come our way, as they would be very much appreciated.

Ezraeil,

waiting with baited breath!

which reminds me what is baited breath? it sounds like a guy that takes fishing too seriously and keeps his worms in his mouth to keep them warm.... (gag)

keep up the good work sir!

Im watching this space closely waiting for the tut Ezraeilbeatus. Can't wait.
Ive just downloaded a multi-part video tut by a Desty about how he made a model of a Colt 1911 pistol from beggining to end in XSI and it is extemely helpful in explaining a lot of the processes in modeling, a very helpful tut, but it is large and about 5 hours worth of video.
you can get it here
http://halflife2.filefront.com
and search for colt 1911

Nice find Ill have a look at them and see if i can find what I'm doing wrong. If I do, I will defiantly start a how to for dummies like me section.

Now see! just 10 seconds in and I learn how to put a very useful pluprint drawing into xsi so I can use it as a reference!

once again great find.

yeah I found the same as soon as i started watching this, and thought it would be pretty good as i am a novice at the modeling game myself and everybody should find it informative
