Need a little help

hey folks, see if one of you can help me.  Im trying to throw some mods on but i cannot get them to appear in the MOD selection box.  I created a mod folder and thru the mods in there: nothing.  I copied down the mod path that is given when you click on the "mod path" and still nothing.  so im kinda at a loss.  let me know step by step what i can do to get it to work.  thanks

Got the latest update? Start your game up, and look in the very bottom right corner, it should say '1.02'

If you have got the latest update, can you post a screenshot of your mod folder with the address bar visible at the top please.

If it doesn't show up the only thing that comes to mind is that it's not a properly made folder.. check to see that it looks like this:

user path\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods\"mod name folder"\"GameInfo","String",etc

Basically, the mod it self needs a folder within the Mods folder, and then that needs to follow the same structure as the vanilla Sins install. Need a GameInfo, String, Texture, Window, etc folders, whatever the mod modifies.

What I'm thinking is that maybe you didn't have "extract with folder names" on, so it just dumped all the files in there but not organized into folders like it should be. Only thing I can think of for not showing up in-game.

Also check to make sure you unzipped/unrared the mod before putting it into the mod folder. (I've done that before when I was in a rush or distracted)

thanks for responding, annatar, i think you might of hit on it, my rout is diff. let me get more spec so you guys can hit the prob. i have the mod as a folder in my downloads, if i drag and drop into mod folder (which i had to create in the sins directory) it doesnt work. i also have the mod as a win rare which i extract to the following rout C:\Program files\Stardock\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mod. The files appear in the mod folder yet donnot appear in the in game mod options. Now the route that they give me under mod path, i enter it as a place to extract the file, and i extract it, i have no idea where the heck it goes but it does extract it. any ideas and thanks for helping

The path for mods, based on your OS, is:

Vista:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods

XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods

NOTE: Make sure you have “Show hidden files and folders” enabled in Windows Explorer, otherwise you may not see these.

That's where you need to extract the mod :)

this thread is a great find. couple points i would like to point out.

1. So far as i can tell, there is no "this how to do it" explanation for how to get a mod to install and work... other than this thread.

Why was there no file or "readme" that was bleedingly obvious upon updating the game for doing the mods?

Is it just me being a dummy?
^^ feel free to flame if I'm just a computer idiot who prefers computer games yet doesn't know how to mod a game :SNIFF!:

2. sooo, i updated the game.. looked online for the information i just mentioned about "how do i get these mods, and where do they go".... finding this thread is the closest thing i have run across for figuring this situation out.

Having said this... i clicked "Show hidden files and folders" and i Swear that pathway doesn't exist... so i created that pathway myself...

anyway, I'm a try to get a mod to work now and see if that self created pathway will work for me to get the game to work. Wish me luck, maybe i can figure this out without everyone here having to hold my hand through this step by step, which is probably what I'll need I'm afraid. :(

Any help on this topic would be Very much appreciated thanks in advance.!.

well... i downloaded no pirate raids... into the self created folder... loaded the game and it didn't seem to work...

so i checked inside the actual sins game folder... and low and behold.. the "no pirates" folder was somehow magically in the sins game folder... so my rational for this is that the game reads from that specific file path in order to get its mods.

I guess i'm at the same point now that the OP is/was... how do i get it to work in game?

thanks for the info as is.. i seem to be making some progress ;)

Figured it out!

Reading the ReadMe file that comes inside the game after downloading the update... Um.. Helps hahahahaha

sorry i'm an idiot... got it now and this thread Helped a Ton... I wouldn't have figured it out because i wouldn't have thought to view the hidden stuff!

thanks again

Please, PLEASE, post a screen shot like this:

Or this:

We can only help you so much with install instructions and directory locations, but mistakes can easily be made. The second shot there is not mine, but someone posted it in my mod's Page after he was having problems. I immediately saw the problem and he was on his way. So please, take a PrtScn (PrintScreen), paste it into Paint, save it as a .jpeg, then go to ImageShack.us and upload your picture. Then copy the last link they give you after the upload, and paste it in to your reply.

This will eliminate any obvious problems, and then we can move on to other things that may be wrong.

A picture paints a thousand words, and it can't be described wrong either. Help us help you.

It's been ages since I used XP, but shouldn't "user" be your actual username? There should be various other folders (multiplayer saves, single player saves, settings, screenshots, etc).

Do you see those, or did you have to create everything?
i initially thought i had to create everything... then i actually found the pathway spelled out in this thread... i know my path is right... i just don't really know why the mods decided to not work after they where working for the one mod... strange

wow i am more computer illiterate than i want to believe.. i cant seem to get the image to paste like you were able to do above... and I've done this simple function before... *shakehead* try not to hate me too much

^^ wow and that was from doing what i already did two other times again. man i must be having a bad day or something.

and to answer your question... i'm the only one that uses this computer sooo there is no user other than me. the computer has no reason to make an identifier because there is only a "user" and not a specific "(insert name)" user....

Okay, backtrack just a bit.. so you're saying that if, in that screenshot, you hit the back button to go into the main Sins of a Solar Empire folder, you see other folders for saves, screenshots, replays, etc?

Sorry to be asking stupid questions, but the only two ways I can think of that you won't be able to select the mods in-game is a) wrong mod path, or b) the folders inside the mod haven't been properly created when you extracted.

Erm, what are the Textures and Window folders doing in there?
i thought thats where they went..? i got a go back to work.. i'll be back online in about two hours... yes here is a pick from clicking one up..

No, the Textures and Window folder MUST go in each of the mod folders that use them. If the mod had them in, then you must put them in. The Textures folder usually comes with just the textures the author changed or added. You must first put the original folder in, all 1.07Gb of it. Then you must copy in the custom ones.

Basically, if the mod used textures, you must have a textures folder (all of it) in the mod's directory. Thats why it can become very space consuming if you have more than one or two mods using custom textures, as each mod will be over a Gig.
Until 1.03 anyway, when we'll only need the mod-specific textures :) Good catch Uzii, I didn't even notice.. but then, my excuse is I was rushing *out* of work, so :)
k let me try to use a mod now with those other files outside the mod folder

thanks for all the help folks.. sorry i'm such a lame duck here

do i put the entire folders inside the applicable/corresponding folders or do i open the folder of the mod and just drop all the stuff inside the mod folder into the folder of the same name in the Sins directory?

I'm slowly but surely (hopefully) getting this... I did something a few minutes ago that totally corrupted the game and now i'm running a fix... so i know That isn't what i'm supposed to be doing. also learned an incredibly valuable lesson... backup files before i do something even if i think its very simple and not dangerous... (i know you guys think i'm an idiot already :D

I've officially figured it out... thanks again everybody. Wouldn't have been able to figure it out without everyone's help!

man you want to talk about frustrating.... i got it to work for no pirate raids... and the red bar that indicates how much is completed with ships... and then i tried to put the mod for more hangar space in and.... it wont work... but the red bar dosn't go away and the no more pirates isn't working anymore!

what a PITA!!! I think im going to try to keep it simple and just go with one mod at a time.... do the hangar space mod and be done with it until there is a more extensive mod that includes all mods i want... i cant seem to get more than one mod at time to work.
