Need a little help

hey folks, see if one of you can help me.  Im trying to throw some mods on but i cannot get them to appear in the MOD selection box.  I created a mod folder and thru the mods in there: nothing.  I copied down the mod path that is given when you click on the "mod path" and still nothing.  so im kinda at a loss.  let me know step by step what i can do to get it to work.  thanks

well read in another thread that its one mod at a time sooooo repaired the files with originals and tried to just use the hangar mod... still wont work... i think i'll reinstall and do the hangar mod first and see if i can get it to work...

^^ performed the above action and got the hangar mod to work.... Then i closed the program... reopened it again a few minutes later after doing something on the internet.... and WTF the mod is no longer working... *confused* i'm really disappointed by this turn of unexpected quark.

Just make another folder with your hangar mod.

what do you mean? and do what with it and place it where! lol you have to remember i am riding the short bus when it comes to this game!

i hope that people read this thread and after they smack their foreheads at some point get a laugh out of how much effort it's taken me to get this far and the fact I've not given up yet

Make a folder called Hangar whatever. Copy all the relevant folders from your game directory into that folder (GameInfo only, I'm guessing). Then copy over the hangar files to that folder too. The new ones should overwrite the 'base' ones. Then you can enable the mod.

Ooooh Kay... i'll try to follow those instructions to a T and see what happens... i dont see how that will fix the unexplained issue though... but hey, im riding the short bus ;p

Thanks for your replies as i am assuming im not the only person that has encountered this problem, as you seem to be very confident of what the solution is. I'll see if i can get it to work with your fix. Will prbly take me 2 hours and sever reinstalls with my MOD skills at work :(
Reply #32 Top
Yeah, either i don't understand those instructions... or i didn't get it right from what you want me to do... either way i tried a couple things... starting first with what you described in-full; first...... then i tried some other stuff that was similar to what you said but none of the three things i tried fixed it...

I Don't understand why it Would work... and i didn't do Anything to the game after it worked.... and i load the game up 15 minutes later and it Doesn't work? what changed because I Didn't change anything? :SNIFF!:

i'm going to fix the game using the same system i used to get the mod to work the first time and see if it works again under the same conditions i got it to work the first time, Then if i get this same error after playing the game and it works and close then reopen the game and it Doesn't work, I'm going to have to hit myself in the ear!

So, it worked, you close the game, you opened the game, you RE-ENABLED the mod and then tried it? Closing the game will remove any mod activated, unless you tick the 'Load Mod on Startup' box.

If you did that and it didn't work, then you really need to start posting more screenshots. Descriptions can only give us so much to work with, something inconsequential to you may be the one thing that is messing everything up and we would see straight away.

So, I ask you to post a screenshot of:
- The inside of the mod folder you are trying to activate (with address bar visible)
- The number of files in each of the folders in the mod folder you are trying to activate

And possibly:
- The insides of every folder in the mod folder you are trying to activate

Cut and crop as much as you like to get the pictures smaller if you want, but show us this and we may be able to help you further.

And yes, I am impressed you've stayed on this problem for so long. I admire you will to persevere.

Until 1.03 anyway, when we'll only need the mod-specific textures Good catch Uzii, I didn't even notice.. but then, my excuse is I was rushing *out* of work, so

Oh really? Nice. So mods will work more like a merge than a "preferred install"?

I thought it was somewhat silly (and volumous) to basically relocate the entire install to the mods folder.

Will this work with everything (entities/windows/etc) as well?

As far as I know it's only textures and such.. I don't think we'll see it with GameInfo because the Textures folder is just a collection of unrelated graphics/images, but the GameInfo has lots of internal dependencies. So, I don't know :P
Reply #38 Top
Well, Textures is a pretty major step.. at least GameInfo/Window folders are small, having to have a 1gb folder in each mod that modifies a single .tga is meh :)

I'm going to download fraps and once i get fraps active, im going to repair the game so it should be back to its "OEM" configurations.... at that point i will erase all the mods i have on the computer and start fraps...

#1 backup the folders i will need to backup encase it causes the game to die on me...

#2 download the hangar mod that i want to use.

#3 and at this point you all will be able to see what i'm doing and how its being done...

gime a few minutes to get set up and prepped and i should have a nice video for you all in a few minutes.
wow they changed fraps from what it used to be... i can only record 30 second clips at a time.... so you folks may have ot click through several videos for the game videos...

also, it wont record while at the desktop, which is weird because i used to be able to do that... like i said maybe they changed it or i used to own the full version...

I'll work on compiling all the info your asking for and get a nice post together. Thanks again for all the help.

Just a couple of screens man. One inside each of the folders in the Mod, and then one inside the mod itself. You've got 15 minutes then I'm off, maybe someone else can help you after that, or maybe you'll have to wait another day :D ;)

OK here goes....

this last one is my desktop with my shortcuts to all the folders that i am working with ... one thing that occurred to me is that somehow working through the shortcuts could be causing the problem? any idea about if that's possible or not.

please let me know if i missed anything you are looking for and if i need to take more screen shots of anything else...

-v- im going to post the fraps 30 second clips of me trying to activate the mods in game and show that they are actually Not active in game...

oh by the way if you want to get on yahoo messenger with me for trouble shooting purposes... my handle is "anderskorn350z" i have mic so we can use voice.

as soon as the wife gets her new debit card in the mail I'll probably be buying the new version of fraps so i can get the full length video in-game... erks me they changed it.. it USED to be 20 bucks, now i remember, i had the full version on my old computer... i should find out what my information was that i used there... maybe i can recover the program...

EDIT: im not going to mess with the fraps video for now because the entire 30 second limit really pisses me off, i'm trying to recover my old file from the other computer and i sent the fraps people an email so hopefully they will get back with me so i dont have to pay 40 freeken dollars for the program. sigh.

I think you're doing it backwards? You copied over your old files from the base directory, but after you had copied the mod's files (or at least it seems that way from the screenshot)? The basic gist of it is this: we want to include all the GameInfo files the game needs to run, but then we want to pop the mod's files over the top of them.
Ok, that is weird. Everything seems above board, except one thing. In the GameInfo for the mod, you have 895 files. In the GameInfo for the main directory, you have 896. That means there is one less file in the Mod'd folder. This maybe part of the mod, but I doubt it, as I'm pretty sure all mods either change(same number as main directory), or add(higher number than main directory) files, rather than remove.

The one thing to do really, is either find out which file is missing, or, a quicker way, copy all the files in GameInfo from your main directory into the mod's GameInfo folder, and when asked to replace, click 'No' on all(895) of them. One file should be new, so you won't be asked to replace it.

A couple of questions that you may or may not have asked already, but just for clarity, and for me;
- Did you create any of the Folders manually at anytime? (Right clicking, New... -> Folder)
- Is your username user?

Good luck, I'll be back tomorrow lunch (GMT), if you're still stuck, or maybe someone else can help you 'til then.

Edit: @ Carbon016; No, he has done that correctly, check the dates on the files in the main directory's GameInfo folder.

im going to erase Sins and reinstall completely. after that i'm going to download the mod for hangar space and do everything Again....

Carbon's comment, though hard to believe, might be right, though i was Very careful with the files after i blew the game away yesterday and had to reinstall...

I'll give it a shot one more time because who knows, i got it to work once but the fact still remains that we still havn't solved the last known problem i've had, which is the fact the MOD was working, i closed the game and reopened it 10 minutes later without messing with ONE thing in the files, and it no longer worked...

A couple of questions -Did you create any of the Folders manually at anytime? (Right clicking, New... -> Folder) -

Is your username user?

to #1 i did create the folders manually at one point right when i tried figuring this out and couldn't find the path, because they were hidden. Later i erased this pathway.

to #2, my user name is Andy as you will see in the following picture, but the pathway doesn't go through that user name and that user name doesn't appear in the folder specified as described it should. *confused*

Turn off "hide hidden folders and files" in Folder Options and then look for it under your username (Andy). This is probably the problem!

If you installed Sins, you will have a C:\Documents and Settings\Andy\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\mods folder, you may not be able to see it though, because Local Settings is default set as hidden.

So what you're probably doing is sticking it in some other 'user' directory that the game has no connection to and therefore it's not working?
there is NO "andy" under documents and settings..... the path you folks are giving me is under "user" and i dont know why.!.
