Is there a way to tell how I am doing compared to the other players?

My goal is to check tech level and ship numbers of the other players. Basically, I want to attack the weakest opponent. I especially want to monitor the number of ships the other guy has. If I see a sudden drop, it is time for me to strike.

Kind of...There's a 3 level thing that shows how YOU are ranked. 3 categories broken down in to 3 subcategories each.

It doesn't tell you who's first or anything though. Just how well you are. It's easier if it's a 1v1...

Sykonaut is talking about the right thing, he just forgot to mention where it is.

In the lower bar of the user interface, just to the left of the ship portrait, there are three slots that show different things depending on what is selected. For example, if I have a capital ship selected, it will display health, shield power, and anti-matter.

If you were to select nothing (or rather de-select everything) then three little medals will appear. Do a mouse over of these medals to see your standing in economy/military/research.

In this screenshot, I was just trying to see just how many lasers I could get on the screen at once, but you can see the three slots I'm talking about just to the left of the unit portrait.

I might've been a bit brusque, but I certainly wasn't trolling.

The little empire rank thingy that everyone keeps telling him about is far from what he's asking for.

He's asking for an up-to-the-minute report on fleet strengths and technological advancement, so he can plan surgical strikes against weakened opponents. Something like the end-game screens, no doubt.

That is NOT the sort of thing that needs to be in an automated report during the game. It's what God made scouting for.

I know, because I'm not terribly good at scouting, personally, and it makes life very hard for me. Scouts are, however, the way you find out about the other guy's strengths and weaknesses, and that's as it should be. (And to make up for my shortcomings, I play Advent and just use psychic powers to see what I want. ^_^)
