When to make a fleet out of your cap ship?

I see a lot of post that state to set the fleet button on as soon as you cap ship is built. Do you keep it on auto join? and when it is set to fleet can you still send the cap ship into the first planet/asteroid to colonize without the other ships in the fleet going in too? For example: I make a cap ship (TEC) with colony ability make a fleet but when I click on the cap ship to send it in first to be the damage sponge and then send my support firgates in it seems thay all go together and the light frigates get there first because the cap ship is so damn slow which cause me to lose frigate(s) at every early encounter. What do you guys do and how do you send you fleet in? Please let me know. Thanks...

I just send every frigate a bit away from the capitalship/jumppoint and then I tell my cap ship to move. Or I dont create a fleet at the start and send the capital ship first and let the frigates follow it. Since I use the capital only for the first few planets as damage sponge, the 'micro' is not that annoying. After that I create a fleet and dont use my capital ship as damage sponge any longer.

I don't fleet up my ships.

For my "big" fleet, I'll assign it to 1 (using the CTRL key and the 1 key). Then I will divide my fleet up further. I will assign the cap ships and the Kodiaks (I play TEC obviously) to 2. I will assign Cobalts, LRMs, carriers, and support craft to 3. And then I will assign my siege frigates to 4.

When I need to move though friendly space I hit "1" and right click. When I'm attacking a planet I hit "2" and right click. Several seconds later I hit "3" and right click. And then as the defenses are wiped out I hit "4" and send in the planetary bomb squad. Muwahahahaha!
