Invalid Save Files after 1.03 update

Just updated to 1.03 and it says all of my save files are invalid, including auto-saves! Grrr.
I take it this isn't intended behavior? I didn't see anything in the patch notes about it... Am I out of luck?

Yes that is intended behavior, certainly was so since version 1.0

I'm afraid you are out of luck my friend. Every time you update the game, the old save games don't get updated. This means that you have extra files that are required to be loaded, but that your old save games don't have. You might as well delete them, all they do is take up space on your hard-drive. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Does this include epic, huge multiplayer save games? Is there a way to roll back to 1.02?

Only if you have configured SDC to archive before updating ....

Saves and replays are almost always going to be broken between versions, due to balance changes made (unit stats will be mismatched between save and game data, etc). It's to be expected.

The only way to revert to 1.02 at this point would be to have made an SDC archive prior as Peace Phoenix says, or to have the retail disc and the 1.02 installer still on hand.

Yah they should of made a note of this or auto-archieve it imo. :P

But i think it's to be expected that updates will break replays and saves, it does so in almost every other game. A warning still would of been nice.

It is not expected if it is not mentioned when you get the big popup in Stardock Central to patch the game. I just lost a save game with 5 hours played...

It's been mentioned for previous patches that in general you should not expect saved games to work with different game versions.

I don't think it needs to be repeated before every patch :P

Don't worry, it'll have to be repeated by 1.04 too :P

In general though, it's pretty common these days for games to not be save game compatible across different versions. It's unfortunate, but such is life.

I'm not sure about that, it's been my experience that very few games make their save games incompatible.

I have to agree that it should be called out in the patch notes. There is no reason not to.

I lost a huge game I had in progress too, and if I had seen that in the patch notes I would have held off a few days. Because in my experience companies do mention whether or not a patch invalidates saved games, so I just went ahead and patched.

It completely depends on the underlying structure of a game and what all data gets inherited or absolutely specified. I don't know how Sins works, but if you have a save game where it absolutely specifies that your frigate has 2 armor, 20 of 600 shields, and 400 of 400 hull points then you instantly have a problem if the armor, shield, or hull points change. Now if that same save game said you had +1 armor, 0.03 shields, and 1.0 hull points, then any change to the armor, shields, and hull of your frigate will automatically adjust for gameplay changes. 2 is an absolute value that has no idea what the default should be, whereas +1, 0.03, 1.0, or some other multiplier is a relative value. It requires the original armor number for that vessel to be calculated and then instanced referencing those original numbers and then applying the modifiers to create this specific unit.

It's all a matter of underlying structure. I've played games that invalidate their saves and other games that don't. I've had some funny things happen with save games that aren't invalidated and a lot of normal experiences too. When you're targeting lower-end computers it's highly likely that absolutely saving everything will tax system resources less and your customers will perceive good performance when saving and loading. If everything is instanced and referenced then there's exponentially more stuff to calculate and perceived degraded performance despite a much more flexible system. It's a design decision pure and simple.

In most games that I have played, when you update the game you can still play the old games but they won't have the features of the new patch. I guess I shouldn't have assumed anything but it was still disheartening to see that I could no longer play an epic game that I had been playing for a couple of weeks. I was pissed for a while. Then I started playing a new game and got over it. lol

Same thing just happened to me. Sucks to, I had a 5 hr game I was planning on continueing tonight.

I suppose for a game like Sins I can understand the saves being invalidated due to the data architecture or whatever, but at least have the patch installer warn about this so we can finish our in-progress games first. Killing saves without warning is just poor form.

It was announced in the 1.03 announcement on this site, and right below the standalone download link when you click on Download Updates.

Ah, I do see that now. I downloaded from FileFront, go figure. =p

Which actually shouldn't be possible anyway. So blame FileFront for uploading the patch without permission. :p

Are you guys serious?  What other games have you played that did this?

Besides making replay files incompatible I've never ever had this issue of screwing up my save files so I couldn't play them again.

This is a ridiculous issue and I can't believe this still happens.  A game of Sins takes hours to complete, that's a lot of time to waste.  I have a 10 player FFA, or sorry, I should say I HAD a 10 player FFA going on and there goes many hours of my life.

This issue made me so angry...  good way to ruin a great game for me right there.

Sorry, man but get over it.  Every patches has changed the balance of the game (sometimes just slightly), which would mean the saved game you have would have played out differently anyways.  Besides, they do warn you.

Edit: I have no idea what year it is.

Don't revive old threds.  It confuses me.
