Everything's in binary

I'm like, really tired so bear with me.  Trying to make some little modifications to Sins Plus 1.2 (wanted to change some values on the defensive structures), but upon opening notepad everything's in binary?  I edited the previous files before this just fine, before updating to 1.3 and getting the new SP mod.

Am I missing something important here, lol?

I will answer this question this time, but please post in the mod's thread, thats what it is there for. Also, putting the mod in your post title may have yielded an answer earlier. Next time, I will not answer you if you don't post inside the mod's thread. Ok, on to your question;

I have used the files directly from the 1.03 patch in my update. This is mainly so the changes in 1.03 are included (as many as possible anyway). Also, it loads quicker and is smaller in size. After I have updated 1.2 for some unrelated error on my part, I will go about putting together a 1.02 compatible one. This is for those who don't want to update.

After that I will try to get my mod in as much text readable format as possible. That means I will be using files edited from 1.03 in their binary format, but the other files that have not been altered by the latest patch will be in the normal readable state you have been using prior to this.

it's indeed very iritating sind's the ConvertData.exe is not compatable with vista...
....

as for the Uzii and Bailknight's MOD is partly Binary they cut of the heads of people that use Vista...

anyway you can't progress Vista will be the future and holds the key..
ether Iron Clad need to supply a exe file that works with vista or Modding in this game will loss

ConvertData converts text to binary anyway, not backwards.. it's used after the mod is finished to convert everything to binary, but it can't reverse engineer anything, so to speak :P

Thank you Annatar. And Abisha, I will go to Hell before I switch to Vista. You are exceptionally deluded if you think Vista is the key to the future. I have heard no good comments about it since its release, and a nion unlimited list of problems that have been cause by, or are directly related to, Vista.

I guess about a year before they get it into working order, until then, I'll stick to "Ol' Faithful" here, XP. *Strokes Computer lovingly and whispers silently to it*

Are you serious?

That has to be the most ignorant post I have read to date. Have you even tried vista, or are you just going off the biased opinions of reviews and friends? If you have not personally tried it, then you have no place making statements like that.

While I won't say Vista is perfect, no OS is perfect - all of them have problems. But I would say Vista is better than XP. I have had both a noticeable speed increase on my system, as well as no drops in performance for my games (I run Vista Ultimate 64bit with the SP1 RC). I have very, very few problems ( have had a few, minor annoying problems, and I think the Vista Aero theme is bloated, but you can easily change that to classic and it looks good).

I think you need to stop listening to fan boys and get out there and try something for yourself.

No way, Laptops suck massive... *cough*

PC's all the way :D

Anyway, back on topic :d

Edit: CoreInsanity, please... What do you take me for?

I'm not getting into this discussion here, its neither the time nor the place. I have my views, you have yours, and thats what they are, views and opinions. And we all know opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, and they're always shitty.

Side note, the forum is fixed

It would be extremely nice if the Modding Pack reference data could be redistributed as 1.03 text instead of binary. There are a number of my personal tweaks that are in limbo now. Do I keep the new binaries and their unknown differences, or do I throw them away and possibly break something by using OLD reference files with my tweaks.

Update reference files for 1.03 please.

This may apply to the mesh and texture stuff as well, I have no idea.

On the same machine this is totally laughable. XP will run circles around Vista on the same HW. If you want to see how your 2GB XP machine will run Vista, take out half your ram and that is a pretty good preview.

I agree we should not get into that discussion here - I just dislike seeing people making statements such as that without actually trying it (And it looks like you did), because I did exactly that when it came out, and when I actually tried it I was shocked to see it was nowhere close to as bad as the reviews say it was.

I have run XP and vista, on the same hardware - Vista ran better. I don't make posts without having first hand experience of seeing for myself the results.

I don't know what hardware you seem to be running it on, but my vista runs fast, response times are fast, etc. Yea, you may have to use your brain to turn off some of the crap they have on by default, but once you do its works wonders (Even without that crap on it ran faster).

Though, I am on newer hardware, so I can't speak for people with older computers.

nah lets keep this on topic.. whas only refaseing to Vista by ConvertData.exe was not working on Vista..

a Vista VS the world will serve nobody on this game atm

Thanks guys. :)

Now for the ConvertData, I do see that in the mod pack, but have never used it. Is it used to convert to binary simply for performance gain?

I ask because I have my old text .entity files that I rebalanced for single player, and am using them just fine in 1.03 right now. Granted, there's only like 4 of them, and they only modify the orbital defense platforms for each side, but should I be converting them to binary?

Yep, pretty much exactly it. Sins reads text files fine, but reading from the binary format is faster for it. It may not make much difference for the top end hardware, but the lower end PCs would probably notice it more :P

Thanks again, that was fast. :)

Binaries really can decrease the loading times. When i finished my mod public beta version, first i wanted to publish in text format. I've tried 3 times to enable the mod, the first 2 attempt casued a crash, but the third time the mod activated in 6-8 minutes :S

So a dumb question, how do we convert from binary into an editable text format? or so we have to wait for IC to give us the files.

thanks,

Kushan

There's a converter available somewhere here, but I doubt people will take too kindly to you "decompiling" their mods. If they want people to edit/view them, they'll offer a text version too.

Does anyone know what has changed in the Orbital structure files?

It seems that using the older v1.02 files causes the AI not to attack obital structures automatically..

And where is this magic converter may I ask? I think you have got your wires crossed. We can convert Text -> Binary, but not Binary -> Text.

What, everything? I know there's a bug with pirate gauss turrets and frigate shipyards, are you saying nothing gets auto-attacked?

I think someone was trying to figure out the encoding on the Sins binary files before IC released the text versions. I remember he had some progress, but not whether or not he fully succeeded and/or released it for download :o

Well for my mod, which uses v1.02 files, some structures like, turrets, hangers and extractors aren't been auto-attacked at all.
