General Question About Model/Meshes

Pretend I don't know anything about models, meshes or formats for a moment. Is it possible or practical to move models available elsewhere into Sins format? The Ironclad converter is good for the last step, but is it possible to convert between model formats to get to that point? I'd like to try some model replacements, but I'm not sure what format these are in or if they're able to be converted to the right format without having 3DS or something.

To use the models in game, you have to have them in .mesh format. The converter is good for that, but you need to have the models in .xsi format to use it. There are several ways you can go about it. If you have 3DSMax, you can use the unofficial importer/exporter to port models directly to .mesh format. Or, you can get the free modelling tool from Softimage to convert them to .xsi format and then use the converter. However in most cases you will need to tweak the models, for example, you will need to add the weapon hardpoints, exhaust etc. as well as make sure your model has mapped tangents and properly formatted textures (Sins uses three textures per model to render them ingame, so its not enough to just have a skin texture).
