Why can't I add to existing fleet?

Hi all. I'm amazed to even ask this question, but the three of us who bought the game online and have been playing have not figured out any simple/reasonable way to do the following:

Have an existing fleet of, let's say 10 ships. Have another frigate at the same planet that is not in the fleet.

How do I add this lonely frigate to the fleet without disbanding/recreating the fleet?

The closest i've seen is to select the fleet, then shift+select the lone frigate, and "F" to add to fleet. This will add the frigate to the fleet BUT: The BIG problem with this is that the lone frigate will not stay in formation, it will fly to the new fleet location with the fleet, and once there, instead of stay in formation it will RETURN to the spot where it was when i told it to join the fleet. This looks like a bug?

help and thanks.

I usually click the "create fleet" button with all ships in the system selected (zooming out and drawing a box around the whole system).
Then a new fleet is formed and all ships stay in formation.
Did you try giving a move order to the whole fleet after the ship has been added? That might help.

Okay, seems there is some strange effect if you try this and the auto-join fleet option is enabled. This seems to work OK if you do not have auto-join enabled, otherwise the added ships "remember" their rally point.

Thanks for the help.
