minidump problem

minidump problem

so is there a fix for this or what?

i just bough the retail cd version of sins, installed it and BAM....minidump.

come on. is it really too much to ask for a game to be playable out of the box?

is soon as i click play...the screen goes black and i hear the error chime. i have to cntrl esc. out and there is the little minidump error box. i have yet to even see a title or anything.

my specs:

windows xp sp2

athlon x2 6000

gforce 8600 gt 256

4 gb ram.

im seeing a ton of these problems on here....but dont seem to see any kind of a fix. maybe i missed it?

i even created a profile with nothing running and installed it there...same thing.

i have all drivers updated.

what exactly is the problem here?

the game will not at all start...or even make an attempt at starting...100% of the time i imidiately get a minidump error when trying to load the game. its imidiate...click play get error. do not pass go do not collect 200 dollars.

as you might suspect...im pretty anoyed at shelling out 40 bucks for a coaster.

I also just downloaded the game and get the mini dump problem before the game loads. I'm not that great with computers so any step by step method on what to do would be appreciated. Ty! :)

My best advice would be for those of you are experiencing minidump problems to download the 17x.xx Nvidia drivers from www.laptopvideo2go.com whether you have a desktop or laptop. You can find 17x.xx in the forums. I personally run 171.16 and have seen performance and stability improvements in everything. Sins will get mad at me like Crysis does if I alt-tab out of the game (sound distortion, popping, and FPS drop), but I've isolated that problem to an AC'97 Sigmatel driver that unfortunately hasn't been updated in years. If the video driver update doesn't help, then consider reducing hardware sound acceleration to see if that helps at all.

Hey Cha0s.... have you tried actually installing the game? You said yourself you didn't have a folder for it. :D

Seriously though, I'd try a reinstall, sounds like something got fubar'd during the install, so it won't load. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the advice! I tried to restart the game to see what the minidump was but it worked fine second time! I don't know if it was a one off or what but it seems to work now.

I appreciate the help :)

ok well i tried both the drivers suggested by zjbdragon and the new nvidia 174.74.

no change whatsoever.

i still get the minidump as soon as i try to launch the game.

i have also uninstalled and reinstalled sins several times.

and still i have no minidump file even though it keeps telling me it saved one.

Sometime a picture is worth a thousand words. Is this the location you are looking for sinsdumps? This isn't me being rude. I have a minidump problem of my own and I'm just trying to help.

Yes, actually, there is arguing that point. They have done their best to produce a great game, but its physically impossible for them to test it on every single possible combination hardware and software. As such, they release a game that is to the best of their ability "perfect" -- and as that ability is merely human, it isn't perfect. Instead of whining because they made a mistake, mailing in the minidump solves the problem. "To err is human, to forgive, divine" -- you paid for software, not a work of god.

I think that what Chaoswyrm is saying (and at least, how I also feel) is that most of us haven't had problems quite this bad with ANY other game. I understand that the game can't be perfect. Given that the the same issues come up TIME AND AGAIN on the forums (I wish I had statistics on this) it seems a little surprising that the game was reportedly rock solid before release. I don't expect it to be flawless, but why is that so many OTHER games install and run without a hitch or maybe a few tweaks/patches or so? THAT is the question, and, honestly, if other companies can do it it makes you wonder if this game was released early or if something was just missed.

I'm not bashing the game. I like the game and have managed to get single-player working with a little time and elbow grease, but haven't made much progress in terms of multiplayer games.

And Chaoswyrm, don't let people tell you not to whine. I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with SoaSE. If you've read the forums, updated your drivers, played with your router settings, and done your part, you have EVERY right to complain. And any good developer would want to hear the complaints along with the praise...how else do you know what people think of your product? The people who invested in your game need to be taken care of. This, literally, is the "forum" for discussing issues and problems, is it not?

LASTLY (and more back on topic), are you still crashing immediately on trying to start the game? Have you gotten passed clicking "play" If you have any kind of a game going that has hit a point where it keeps crashing, try starting a new one. Continuing to reload an older game doesn't usually help...in my experience it just keeps crashing.

One final thought...is anyone who downloaded the full game having trouble? Perhaps some of these problems are limited to people who installed from the retail CD?

I started with the latest drivers from nvidia using their update tool, and it would crash and minidump, but then I switched back to the vista update recommended driver number of 7.15.11.6371 and now it'll ovccasionally try to crash, but then vista recovers after a couple of seconds, and the game plays on.. there is a post as to where stuff is in your computer here..WWW Link

* My game has crashed and told me it saved a "minidump" file. What do I do?

Please open Windows Explorer to the location below and see if your dump file is there.

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\Sins Dump

Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\Sins Dump

If there is a minidump file present, please zip it up along with a copy of a dxdiag from your PC and a description of what you were doing when it occurred to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com. Please note that you must provide your Sins of a Solar Empire serial number in your email to receive support (anti-piracy measure).
