nVidia Display Driver crashing

game freezes, flickers to black screen, resumes eventually

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64, a GeForce 7900 GS, 2 gigs of RAM, and a C2D 6300.

Every now and then while playing, my display driver will crash.  This causes the game to lock up, for a period ranging from a few seconds to a few minutes, and sometimes results in back-to-back crashes.

I applied the Vista KB article patch awhile ago, and since then the game hasn't crashed to desktop, but these display driver crashes still make it not worth playing.

Is this a known issue?  Will it be addressed in an upcoming patch?  Are there any known fixes for it?

This is a very well known issue and the cause is the Nvidia driver itself. SD/IC had a ticket open with Nvidia about it since the earlier betas, and right now Nvidia promises that their next driver release will finally fix the issue.

It is a known issue with nVidia's drivers. They've told us that they think they've got it fixed internally and it should be in the next driver.

Until then, you might try turning down the detail settings from Highest to just High (particularly bumpmaps) and disabling Bloom. Some users have also reported success with an older 97-series driver.

All I know is that the way to avoid them is to take strain off of the graphics card. Try to lower the resolution or take down the effects to high or medium.
