Game looks good, but I'm reluctant to purchase...

I found preliminary info regarding this game to be quite enticing, so I decided to try the demo. However, I've run into a problem when trying to install. I downloaded the demo twice from Filefront.com and once from Gamershell.com, although, unfortunately with the same negative result. I'm now concerned that I may experience the same problem with the retail version. I've listed the installation error below and was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same problem and whether you may be aware of a remedy. Could this problem simply be an isolated issue with the demo? I'm running Vista (32-bit) BTW. Thanks.

Sounds like you have a virus corrupting the installs.

Make sure you have the latest .NET framework from Microsoft installed. Or install XP.

Being unable to load the demo would be discouraging. You can try installing it through Stardock Central or Impulse. These are the official Stardock clients for digital distribution. It's probably more reliable than the stand-alone download. Here's a link.

I know it's not a virus, innociv. My PC is locked down like Fort Knox in that regard. Not only that, but I never visit shady websites or download anything from a questionable source. The only thing I've downloaded are a few reputable PC benchmark utilities and game demos from trusted websites.

Habadacus, I've got all the latest updates for Vista, as well as the latest device drivers. The only exception would be Vista Service Pack 1, which I haven't had time to download and install just yet, but I shall shortly. As far as XP is concerned, I'd have to buy a copy, and I'd hate to do that for one game. I'm not even sure the OS is at fault at this point, but it's a strong possibility.

CraigHB, I tried Stardock, but the game is only available for sale (no demo). I can buy a retail copy of Sins here locally, which I wouldn't mind doing, because the game looks really good, but I scared.

Anyway, thanks for trying to help. Much appreciated. I'll just wait a while and do a search to see if anyone else has experienced this problem.

Well, I just dived right in without trying the demo, and I'm loving the game. One warning though: it plays kind of slow.

Though, if you're a GalCiv player like me, seeing your ships move around in real time is like watching hummingbirds. But that's not the point. If you have A LOT of patience to just wait and see how things play out, this is a game that you will love.

Oh, just turn up your game speed.

For the record, have you tried installing it with your Anti-virus turned off? What anti-virus are you using? Some anti-viruses can mess up installations, I know this for a fact.

The game works on Vista, no problem there. I am running Vista 64 and it's no problem at all.

Have you scanned your harddrive for faults? It may be a concern of this happens to you often and with different files.

Another concern might be if you are trying to Fort Knox your computer too much.

Haha Craig,

You really just ignored the Original Poster's concern and went for a sub-discussion. Shame on you. :P

First off, do you have enough space on your hard drive?
Second, maybe try defragging your harddrive (start->all programs->accessories->system tools-> Disk Defragmenter and then choose your harddrive(s).)
Third-> Try updating Direct X
Fourth-> Pound on the Keyboard and repeatedly shout "Oh God, why!?" because your missing out on an -awesome- game :D

Sorry if none of this helped you, it's all i can think of atm.

PS: Shouldn't this be in the technical forum? You'll probably get more professional help there.

Try running chkdsk too.

And just because you have your computer well secured doesn't mean you don't have a virus. Crap happens, y'know?

And that there my friends, is God's honest truth.

Seriously though, update everything, run a virus scan, run scandisk, defrag your hard drive, make sure you have admin rights, reboot, and try to install. Also, sometimes your download can be corrupted, try deleting it entirely and redownloading it.

If none of that works, I have no idea. You can try contacting Microsoft (the message is from the windows installer thing, right?) and finding out what that error code stands for, and then contact Stardock?

Seems like a common issue for impulse and Sins.

Don't try the demo with impulse, all I can guess?

Followup:

I happened to be browsing through my programs last night when I happened to see a Stardock Games folder. Well, curiosity got the best of me, of course, and I just felt compelled to peek inside. There it was, the Sins demo along with a GalCivII demo, which I had downloaded last week. I just assumed Sins was not there, because of the install errors I was getting. Anyway, I tried both demos and I love them. Two must haves, without question.

Oh, and I just thought I'd ask if anyone knows if there will be a complete bundle package for GalcivII, consisting of the Original Dread Lords and the two expansion packs (Dark Avatar and Twilight of the Arnor)? And, do you anticipate that it will be available in stores in addition to the website? If no such bundle is planned, I'll just go ahead and buy the Gold Edition. Thanks.

Don't get the game until you see that the mini-dump problem has been fixed! Right now, the game crashes at seamlessly random times between the first couple minutes to hours into the game. Eventually, the game crashes continuously making it impossible to continue.

Don't listen to him, he's trolling. Some people seem to have mini dump errors constantly, but for the vast majority it is few and far between...if ever.

The vocal minority, ya kno?
