Strategic Supernova weapon possibility?

Would it be possible to mod a new strategic weapon (ie ultra novalith cannon) that targets a star and have the impact destroy all ships/planet orbitals/player presence in a certain radius from the targeted star?

It would be great if it could remove all life/ships within say two phasejumps of the star or something like that, leaving the planets open for colonization. Would add a little strategic warfare feeling between star systems. Recharge would be based on very high antimatter cost/expensive to build etc. It would be nice to invest in this weapon, build up a fleet and then supernova a neighboring star, followup with an invasion fleet of newly emptied systems.

I am not sure how to get it to target a star and then kill everything within certain distance of said star. Any ideas?

As much as i love superweapons, how are you going to even begin to balance something like this? Wouldn't this turn the game into a race to get to the superweapon first?

its like if they had a deathstar in the game. Everyone would sit there and race to the deathstar because its clearly better than anything else.

I don't know if what you are suggesting is currently possible with the current modding tools. Not that I would know, of course. Try asking Uzii or Skyline Hun. Good luck anyway!  :CONGRAT:

Make it drop so much culture at the star all the planets close to it go neutral ala Advent culture cannon. Only possible problem is letting it fire at the star - is there a constraint for stars too?

Not sure about constraints for Stars, there are very few available to be used. And so far I don't think, unless there is an ability that does something similar, you can effect multiple planets with one buff. The only way I could even see this being done would be the Culture method, but you would have to 'control' the star to do it. So effectively you would have to make the weapon's ability take control of the star and then boost culture by a huge percent. But like Jon9 said, with the current mod tools you have little or no chance to make this happen.

Is it a bad thing that the game would become a race for the cannon? I mean, FPS games often have settings like capture the flag, king of the hill, straightforward annihilation. This would just make another game setting.
