Hi, I'm no good player (you won't see me online), but when I look at the Damage/armor types I find some weird things that explains some of the imbalances.
LRM can deal damage to anything and heavy cruisers too.
Carriers cannot kill light frigates
etc...
So my idea is to change the units armor type and damage type to get a more varied strategies.
Here's what I think that might work (will make a mod after 1.04 release to test):
Ship type : armor type : damage type
scout : very light (VL) : heavy
colony : VL : heavy
light frig : Very Heavy (VH) : heavy
LRM : VL : heavy
Flak : VL : Light
Siege : VL : Capital
Carrier : VH : -
fighter : VL : Light
bomber : VL : very Heavy (VH)
Support cruisers : VL : heavy
Heavy cruiser : VH : VH
Capitals : Capital : Composite
Structures : Capital : Composite
To make things simple:
ship with light weapons are good against very light armor and strikecrafts
ships with heavy weapons are good against very light armor
Ships with Very heavy weapons are good against very heavy armor and capital armor
Ships with composite are good against all ships
Ships with capital damage are good against very heavy and capital armor.
By watching this matchup I cannot see über units or useless ones.
