A nice post... but;
I answered his question to the best of my ability, without actually trying them myself. Yes he asked a specific question, and for that I am thankful. But, could have said what he had tried, what effects he was aiming for, and what files he was editing. When I see a post, with a specific question, that actually looks like they have spent some time on it, I will gladly help as much as I can. But I've seen an increasing amount of posts that, quite frankly, have taken moments to write, and will take a lot longer to respond to. What also irritates me is when the poster doesn't respond. Yes, he may have been occupied with something, but generally, when people really want to know something, they will be checking regularly to see any replies. Even a "Thank you." post would be nice.
I have, as you most probably have seen, answered nearly every topic which I know the answer to, and have generally been patient. Lack of Common Sense is my ultimate hate in this world, and the more this game grows in popularity, the less of it I see here from some newcomers.
Just now I have released a tutorial on how to create a new planet. There is also another one floating around on how to increase Fleet Supply and Capital Ship crews. These, as you probably know, take a long time to make. I have, on average, probably spent twice as much time reading and answering questions and generally helping out others on this forum than working on my mod. I get regular PM's and Emails asking various questions, related to, and not, Sins Plus.
I know Annatar puts a lot of time and patience into these forums, and I have seen a couple of others answering modding questions here. But generally, they would go unanswered if it was not for us few. Most of the other 'major' modders as you put it, answer queries here and there, but generally stick to their mods and questions related to them.
I have to admit though, you are right. My post was out of order, and for that I apologise. However, the point I made is a relevant one, and I will post it again if someone posts a topic like this, but obviously in a less aggressive and undermining manner. And you are mistaken about "that programming background or that artistic talent". I cannot model, my texturing skills are limited, but are growing, and my coding is poor. I have used tutorials and learnt most of what I know today myself. I have used common sense to mod and learn, and gone about things logically. The best tip I can give, is don't start from scratch, but use the Vanilla files and other mods to expand your knowledge, this is what I have done. Two years ago I wouldn't have touched a game file, but now, after personal modding other games, I have finally taken the leap into the deep end and gone for a public release.
