Good game, but in dire need of more single player options

I like this game for it’s gameplay, but am really disappointed that there isn't more single player.  I read online reviews that said that this was the case, but I didn't expect there wouldn't be any type of campaign to play.  As far as RTS games go, this would be like if a Warcraft or Command and Conquer game only allowed you to play a skirmish or do multiplayer.   But ok, this is a different game which is a merging on genres right?

But what about a basic storyline to structure this game around?!  Maybe a full blown immersion and progression of events isn't needed like in Homeworld, but how about a working storyline or sorts like in Both Masters of Orion (1 and 2)?  In each game you were initially presented with a challenge (Destroy the guardian of Orion or beat the other players), and at the end of each game played you at least got nice animations of winning/losing.  Sadly, this game starts you off with no goal in mind other than the assumption to destroy your opponent (who you somehow know exists without ever making contact).  Then after spending several hours of play you are only awarded with a static victory/defeat page followed by game stats.

The opening sequence to this game goes on and on about the history of some galactic conflict.  The unknown narrator cryptically mentioned "they" referring to two different waring factions/aliens/who-knows-what.  Sounds half interesting, I can’t wait till the game elaborates further… but it NEVER DOES!!!  I guess I'll have to imagine who “they” are and what “they” really want.  Hell, I don’t even know for sure if “they” are really in the skirmish I’m allowed to play with either AI or another player.

So my personally rant review:

Gameplay = terrific and ground breaking
Most everything else = unacceptably inadequate or non-existent.

I too have to throw my hat into the "don't care" contingent on the SP campaign mode.

I don't have any interest in replaying narrowly defined missions. I very much enjoy the sandbox galaxy mode instead. I want more fun stuff to play with in the sandbox. The "story" elements can reveal themselves there if the devs get creative with an expansion.

I would like different victory conditions, but as for a campaign I do not really care. I hate it when I buy a game get to one spot I can not beat and if there are no cheats I have wasted my money as I may never see the end.

My vote would be to enhance the sandbox, for max replayability.

there will be a campaign come expansion. It takes time to make a campaign and the devs did not have time to fit it all in. besides, what they tried to do was in a sense an experiment in new game mechanics implementation, which end up to be extremely successful given the reviews. I guess one step at a time.

Ya, the TEC could have a parade with confetti made of cash; the Advent could have a chess tournament (with cheerleaders); the Var's could have a BBQ with a random race as the main course.

I think it's just mighty fine the way it is. Random universes extends playability.

I love it!
