[MAP] The COMPLETE Star Wars Galaxy Map!

Yes, I have undertaken the task of creating a Complete Star Wars Galaxy Map. This map will have anywhere from 35-50 Different Star Systems once completed and should be a very fun map to play. This map will have the following:

  • Complete Systems (As in Courscant will be its own system with its other planets).
  • The Actual Planet Names. I will use 100% Canon, unless there is no name, then I will deem an appropriate name.
  • Core Worlds, Colonies, Expansion Rim, Mid Rim, Outer Rim, Wild Space, and Unknown Region Planets.
  • I will create two different maps, one with Pre-Owned planets so that you can jump right into the Galactic War (Each Planet will be appropriatly assigned; Mon Calamari to Rebels, Coruscant to Empire). And one that starts off just like any old map.
  • This map will support 6 Different Factions at this time. Currently they are: The Galactic Empire, The Rebel Alliance, Corperate Sector, The Hutts, Chiss, and the Hapes Consortium. If you have any ideas for other factions please feel free to comment.

Currently I am around 20% completed on the map with current progress: http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/8427/test1ps5.jpg

Also:

Full Galaxy

So I can expect this map to be done in less then a few weeks. However there is a few things I need from anyone.

Currently I don't know every single Planet in most of the major systems, so if anyone has information like that please feel free to tell me :) (I have the core worlds)

*ALSO PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS MAP WILL USE UZii's PLANET MODS*

So if you have any comments, questions, want to help out, suggestions, or just feel like padding the ol post count :P go straight ahead.

If i may suggest some more contemporary factions for you. Although the factions you have could work. They don't ever appear in the same starwars time line. By the time the Chiss appear, the Rebel Alliance has become the new republic etc etc ...

Putting the time line just after the latest book series gives you six major races, all of whom maintain standing fleets. This period shows the Galactic Alliance as the major power in the galaxy with the Empire, stationed on Baston, and rising in power.

Galactic Empire.

Galactic Alliance.

Yhuuzan Vong

Chiss

Hapes

Ssi Ruuk

These six factions allow for smaller games pairing up the chiss vs the ssi ruuk, or the empire vs the alliance. etc etc.

Technically the Hutts and the corporate sector aren't really factions as they don't maintain a standing fleet which is mostly what this game is about.

Also im looking at the spacing of the map and correct me if im wrong, but wouldnt it take forever to travel between systems the way you have it set up? I have done some playing around with the map editor and if your spacing is too far apart it will literally take five minutes per hyperspace jump.

Just some thoughts.

This looks like a very fun map to play! However, you might want to think about splitting the map into two smaller maps. I say this because I have made maps of this size before and they are near unplayable due to poor FPS mid to late game.

I would say you might want to think about splitting it into 4 or 8 maps. Given how the game plays a map that size would take literally weeks to play through. Has anyone even tested if its possible to load that into the memory or if it crashes?

Just curious

That's roughly 50 stars. That size of map is playable without any fleets but with substantial fleet engagements it brings my 8800GTS to its knees. This map is not going to work out as well as you think it will.

I play tested it earlier and my computer was able to handle it (but i have a very High end computer). I'll go ahead and split the maps up into a few different maps: Such as Core Worlds, Outer Rim, and different "battles" that have occured with the star wars universe. Ohh also thanks for that website, I needed that :D

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page This is the most complete source of SW info on the web. Also I posted an image of the most detailed SW system map I've ever seen. It's in the official SW mod thread I believe.

Blue_Thrasher, when you say you play tested the map and that your "computer was able to handle it" --> that may be because, as you said, you only have 20% of the map complete.

For example, I could have a map with 250 stars though with only 30 or so planets, and that would play fine. The more 'planets' and in-system objects you add the greater the hit on FPS.

Whats more, generally you can't gauge the fps hit unless u click surrender so you can view all the planets at once. Further, you need to get to a stage where you have a number of built up empires before u hit surrender to view all, in order to get an idea of how the game will perform fps wise for players.

Finally, most people don't have 'high' end systems and so if you are aiming this map at the majority of users, you need to keep this in mind.

Still, the maps look like they will rock!

Haha, Well what I meant was that I have also played maps with 1200+ planets fine with absolutly no FPS lag. But that may because of my computer setup. Either way i understand how everyone might not be able to handle this map, thus I will take that into consideration when designing it :)

How many parsecs are you going to make the Kessel run?

i'm attempting to make a SW map as well, and i'm going to make the hapans and mando'ade pirates. the hapan systems will have pirate bases every once in a while, with quite a few in the transistory mists, and the mandalore system will have a few pirate bases around manda'yaim.
