A noob question about auto shooting

i've started playing SoaSE recentry and bacame sort of a junky.
I catch myself regulary at 4am playing and thinking 'how the hell will i wake up in 2 hours?'
For starters, i play with vasari. i tryed TEC but military Vasari suit me better.
Anyway, i have a question about moving and shooting. If I DON'T want to concentrate fire (swarm of rocket frigs fighting AI megaüberOMFGBBQ swarm of light frigates, can i just order move command to take my ships in position? Will they move and shoot? Or will they move ( i am aware of accuraqcy drop while moving) and THAN start shooting around?
I'm having trouble countering swarms (yes, i know, i should make flak frigs (don't know their Vasari name, or if Vasari even have flaks))...

Set your fleet tactics to engage anything in the gravity well and tell them to keep close or medium distance from each other. They will move and engage on their own. Be careful doing that, though, as it could get your fleet killed if you're not paying attention. I imagine even moreso in multiplayer.

I've noticed the targeting AI tends to almost fanatically target ships over structures. Sometimes even if it's dropping its attack on a turret to hit a scout or trader.
