Vasari - What Are They Afraid Of?

I'm pretty sure someone must've asked this by now, but I just got this game like two days ago and did a read-up on each of the races. It seems like the Vasari started off as a pretty powerful empire but then got their rears handed to them by some sort of unknown force and have been running from them ever since.

One of the parts described one of their ships returning back to base badly damaged with the crews driven insane with terror. I found that part pretty intriguing. It's like they've got some sort of Event Horizon thing going on or something. I wonder what this unknown force is? Any speculations?

I wonder if this would be viable as a race in an expansion...

Ten bucks says it's in the expansion. My gut feeling tells me it's going to be some sort of hive mind race, similar to the Zerg in Starcraft.

Wait something just hit me... if they are similar to the Zerg, they wouldn't need crystal or metal to create ships, so how would that work?

I'm an idiot, I need sleep.

Space ponies.

That's funny, I was thinking the same thing. Not space ponies, but a zergish race I mean. Something more biological in nature than the more technological look of the other races. Imagine how cool a capital ship for that kind of race would be.

Yeah I think it would be cool too, but again, what would they need crystal and metal for? So how would that work? I think they would have to be a mix of pure machine and pure biological entity, so they can still have to excuse as why they need to collect resources.

You may be onto something regarding the event horizon, MysticExile. The opening scenes in the intro movie are pretty intriguing...

Experimental Vassari transportation lab -> Vassari finger pushes a button -> Transportation lab goes "boom" -> Vassari vessel in phase space fleeing.

Sounds like they were messing with phase space a bit too much and caused some sort of star trek-ish "subspace" rupture which is slowly expanding and consuming the galaxy. That seems like a best-fit to the lore that we know of so far, but it probably isn't as exciting as a hive-race that the TEC, Vassari, and Advent have to unite and fight against.

My immediate reaction after the intro scene (and knowing the story) was to compare it to another story.

Summary: Mega powerful alien race messes with dimensional technology too much, hole to another place opens up. Horrible energy/soul eating energy critters pop out, start owning everyone and turn now mindless victims into all-conquering slave army. Galaxy in trouble. This is where the heroes/players come in. :-)

The main trigger for my comparison the tentacle-y white energy thing that you see when the research station goes pow. It doesn't look like your generic explosion and certainly like nothing displayed in the game. (Except maybe the "phasing" effect, hmmm.)

Critters like the aforementioned seem appropriate for driving a battle hardend crew nuts. 'Cause I don't think you basic alien soldier/gribbly would do that, no matter how tough they are in combat.

Plus the slave army is something you could reasonably fight as a TEC/Advent/Vassari alliance, unlike a vast galaxy-killing explosion, or the energy critters themselves.

On the other hand: an invading energy race made of pure energy could have unbearably cool-looking space craft. I'm thinking something that looks like its entirely made of white light, illuminating anything in the area. They could be quality over quantity in a big way. (easier on the cpu) And I think we can trust Ironclad/Stardoc to make it good.(please let them be playable, oh please, please, please)

If they don't need crystal or metal then what do they need space credits for? This has been something that's always confused me in most RTS games. So the Orcs are raging murderers, what do they need all that gold for then?

In any case, whatever it is will most likely be in the expansion. My feelings are that this new opponent will be the "sins" in Sins of a Solar Empire. The Vasari were a massive interstellar empire that probably screwed up somehow and now their "sins" are chasing them across space.

Orcs don't rape and pillage for free! They need a steady supply of wimmen and booze to keep them going.

Ultimately, the Vasari race is so vast and powerful that they have no one to fear but themselves.

I suppose as soon as they tech up to Returning Armada there is no power in the universe, no matter how vast, that can defeat them.
